Hello all: My son passed away and I have his Telecaser I do not know much about Guitars I was a drummer for more than 40 years and only play very basic guitar I can entertain my grandchildren that's about it.

The Telecaster is a MIJ Butterscotch 1986-1987 according to the Serial Number F005536. The bridge pickup was dead and I had it replaced. It is missing the knobs on the volume, tone and selector switch. I have looked at replacement knobs which range in price from $10.00 to $200.00. The Guitar has semential value but at the same time I don't want to reduce the $ value of the guitar as I will pass it on to one of my grandchildren someday and who knows what they would want to do with the Tele.

So I'm looking for some advice on what I should do about replacing the knobs. Original, new, relic . . .

Any comments welcome.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike

So sorry to hear of your family's loss. Personally, if the guitar is sentimental to you, I would try and get it back to original style knobs. I am certain the Tele guys here will chime in soon with good advice about what types of knobs you should get.

Very sorry for you about your son .

Telecaster knob are comming with a screw. They fit on any solid shaft pots. The swich knob could be ( not sure ) more difficult if MIM switch these years are import ( metric ) . I don't know.

Modern knob and switch knob have they the exactly same look as your original ? I don't know. But sure they are pretty close.

Do you want original one or close to original ?

Do you have any idea what original knobs look ? I guess not if you don't have them.

IMO Tele knob have so close the same look , take what you find on the shelf at any Fender Guitar store.

a picture of the guitar would help determine what needs to be on it to get it looking original. my first thoughts of a MIJ buttersctoch was that its something along the lines of a 52/50's type tele. does it have a black scratchplate, how many screws hold the scratchplate on ?

to be honest i doubt replacing the control knobs would make a huge difference to the value of this guitar, unfortunately i think losing its original pickup would have more affect on value.

though relatively speaking these arent massively valuable guitars, i have a '85 MIJ 62 custom tele that i had valued at about 1k (gbp) nearly a decade ago. original neck, body and finish is most important, then pickups, hardware, electronics. in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about your son.

Try Acme for a good variety of knobs :

The value of this guitar is between $400 poor cond, to $700 very good cond.

IMO nothing worth pain to find original knobs .

1 original Pickup missing reduce value ; forget original pots .

I believe your son's Tele originally had domed knobs. Look at eBay for them, you want ones to fit a metric shaft. You'll see what I mean when you look at what's available. Some domed knobs are larger than others (sae or metric?), and other knobs are flat on the top with either large or small ridges for grip cut on the sides. Buy the ones you like, domed or flat, it doesn't really matter.

American made telecaster 52 reissue have domed knob , I got one . Easy to find IMO . Metric or SAE ; Telecaster knob need round pot shaft and knob have a screw so IMO any kind of US made knob will fit too.

Easy to try in many Fender guitar store if you bring the guitar.

Alternatively you can use skirted amp knobs.

Sorry to hear of your sons passing.

Not sure where you are located, but Stew Mac in the US should have what you are looking for.

well its not a 52/50's type tele, the bridge, decals and sratchplate are all wrong for that. its also not the butterscotch colour i pictured, but that might just be me.

looks like it might be some sort of japanese standard tele or something.

My condolences over the loss of your son.

Given that the guitar is a more vintage than modern style, any of the early type of knurled knobs will work, along with a black "barrel" type switch tip.
Only thing to watch out for is whether...as has already been noted... the pot shafts and switch blade are slightly different in dimentions to American sizes.

The serial number tells that the guitar was made for Fender Japan at the Fuji-Gen plant in '86-'87.
