I have an '81 "standard" stratocaster (not "the Strat") and was wondering when strats stopped shipping with the ashtray bridge cover? I know they were still included in the late 70's but I can't seem to find out if they were still included on the '81's... thanks.

I could be mistaken and I sometimes am. If I am others will correct me.

If I recall correctly, 1981 was the first year of the "Standard" Strat (version 1). Sometimes known as the Dan Smith Strat. It had a smaller headstock than previous years but it wasn't the historically accurate shape. It used the black CBS logo and I believe was the first year to ship without the ashtray.

And by the way, this is the Tele forum. Strats are across the hall.

sorry guys... I double posted this. I thought I'd posted it and then checked under the strat posts and didn't see it.

* MODERATORS, feel free to yank it.

Thanks I just figured that out

In any event, mine is one of the last "regular 70's" style '81s with the large headstock. It has the S9 serial # but the warranty paperwork and bill of sale both date to 1981.

Then it could be a '78, '79 or '80.
The paperwork will be dated from the date of the original sale rather than the date of manufacture.

It is obviously a matter of personal opinion, but it is my belief that, if played correctly, Strats still smoke!

...and Telecasters will smoke so much that you need a bigger ashtray. :D

I have a 85 E series Squier that the cover fits the bridge and I have a 2000 MIA standard model that the cover doesn't even come close to fitting. Both of the bridges appear similar but they aren't. The Squier's bridge looks just like a late 70's parts bridge I have in the spare parts box so if your looking to add a cover there's a chance it won't fit.
