I was told its 1988.

How come they have 3 pickups (and probably 5 way switch)?

How come ? Sorry I don't know , Have to check in my books if they talk about . But too many books...

1988 , Check serial number ; these are for 1988.

E4 + 5 digits
E8 + 5 digits
V + 4, 5 or 6 digits (U.S. Vintage Series except ’52 Telecaster)

Most likely it's a modded American Standard Tele if it's a 1988 - I think they were routed for the center pickup back then. I know that they have had that route for the middle pickup for quite a while - at least since 1995/96 when the second version of the Tele Plus came out (they used the same pickup/control routes on the American Standard and the Tele Plus even though the Plus had binding and a back contour).

Seeing the serial number - or at least the first few digits - would be helpful. If the American Standard Teles follow the American Standard Strats then they didn't really start using the "E8xxxxx" serial numbers until about mid-1988. It could be that the Teles were behind the the Strats - I've read a couple of places that Fender didn't really start large-scale production of the American Standard Teles until the second half of 1987 due to capacity issues (while production of the AS Strats starts in late 1986).

At any rate if the body is pre-routed then it's pretty easy to add the middle pickup by swapping the pickguard and changing the switch to a 5-way.

As far as why it's called a Nashville Tele it's because a lot of the old school Nashville session players would mod their Teles to incorporate a middle Strat pup so they could add the Quack tone to their arsenal of sounds.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The 2nd generation Tele Plus and the early American Deluxe Telecaster from 1998/99 employed a 2-way toggle switch which allowed seven different pickup combinations in total.

...with many of those adding a B-Bender to emulate pedal-steel bends.

Fender's response was the American Nashville B-Bender Telecaster, first introduced in 1998.

This model is now discontinued.

Do you believe this is an aftermarket mod (in the pic) or done by fender?

If you remove the pickgard you'll see what king of job it is ; routing by Fender ( or by a pro ) or hand made, and type of wire / wiring .

Electronic ( pots ,switch ) could say somthing too.

Don't forget photos for us ; )

The guitar has been modded, there's no doubt about that.

In that case YES this is an aftermarket mod. Fender did not make American Standards with a Nashville layout until 1998.

Only the 2nd generation Pluses and a few Japanese Deluxes were available with such pickup configuration.
