In the book The Fender Telecaster by A.R. Duchossoir. Pictures of '70 to '78 Telecaster show string T.

Is it a "new" buy for you ?

Or a Parts caster ?

Pictures would help

No, no not a new buy. I inherited the telecaster from my brother. But I recently took it to the shop to replace the nut. While browsing in the store, i noticed all the tele's in the store had the string t. Just curious, i asked the owner when Fender started/stop putting on the string t on the telecasters. He said that from what he knew they all had them. Which mine did not. He found it odd as well. There are no signs or hole marks on the head. Anyways, I thought I would post on here to see if it was some kind of an oddity. Or the inspector had too much of something to pass inspection.

The string tree is not needed if you use staggered tuners or a low-friction nut (LSR, Graphtech or Floyd Rose).

Do you ever see '71-'74 tele without string T ? Staggerd tuner is a modern mod.

Low friction nut did not replace string T . String T is to pull / keep string in the nut an give more contact with the nut / wood for tone

Low-friction nuts make the use of a string tree redundant.

Personally no.

But I think that a few guitarists had modified their instruments with staggered vintage-style tuners to eliminate the need of a string guide.

But you'll see a hole for a sting T . This seem not the case here , but not sure cause we don't see any photos.

This is a mere cosmetic detail which does not affect the tone and playability of the guitar.

Someone had left the hole to install a string guide at a later time.

Can't see much of it but it looks to be in pretty good shape if it really is a 40 year old guitar.
The pic isn't high res but from what I can see there appears to be no evidence of a plugged screw hole.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
