I've been searching for an American made Thinline since I started my latest round of Gear Acquisition Syndrome 8 years ago. The MIMs are good guitars but they didn't quite do it for me.

Then the American Vintage Reissue '69s and '72s were announced this year and I couldn't wait to play them. A Candy Apple Red '72 and a 2 Color Sunburst '69 appeared at my favorite Guitar Center this week and the '69 had to come home with me.

This Thinline was worth the wait.

Congrats ! Very nice one :D I had a hard time finding this one at the fender site - I found the -72 . So I have to ask you a couple of questions:
Is it built from mahogany ? What kind of pickups are used ? And what is the price ?
Yes , I'm a sucker for thinlines. I own 2. One MIM '69 3TSB ,one MIJ '69 natural mahogany. I love them both - but the american should perhaps be considered  Enjoy !

The body is mahogany and it's also the first American production Thinline (not counting special runs and Custom Shop Thinlines, of course) to have a thin gloss lacquer finish.

The pickups are the new American Vintage Tele pickups that were introduced with the recent updating of the American Vintage line. They sound clearer than the pickups on the MIM '69 Thinline I had. The bridge pickup has some serious bite.

List price was $1,399.99 but I traded some gear I wasn't using and got it out the door at a great price. Oh and the Thinline comes with a classic 60s style G&G case.

:?: If so - that was a rather short appearance....... but it explains why I did not find it :(

Thank you anyway , john.bohn . That may open up for a good deal in a shop who's still got it in stock

They came out in 2011 along with the '72 Tele Custom and a '72 Tele Thinline; all of those were discontinued (along with the original AV '52 and the AV '62 Custom Tele) when the revised "Pure Vintage" AV series came out in August 2012. The ones left on the Fender website are an FSR version of the AV '72 Thinline (different colors plus a 9.5" radius fingerboard) that was introduced about in June or July of 2012.

Of course. That makes perfect sense . Thanks for the info ! I , for one , I am very pleased with the ones I've got (see my 1st post in this thread)

There are plenty of other tele's to drool over :D Might ''need'' a more classic built one ( solid b ) as the ones I've got are a Squier and an Epi (!)

Yeah, now I'm confused (not a rare occurrence). :)

Most of the large online guitar sales sites in the USA list the 2 Color Sunburst and Olympic White AVRI '69 Thinlines as in stock. I wonder if there was another run or if they're selling off old stock of the 2011 models?

Whatever, I'm glad I found one. It has jumped to the top of my all time favorite Telecasters list.

John - these were probably made up until at least July of 2012 (the new models were introduced in mid-late August) so they are still in stock at various dealers. I've kind of figured out that Fender, being a wholesaler, takes models come off their website once they have sold all they have in their warehouse to their dealers.

That is also why you got it for $1,399 instead of say $1,700 - $1,399 appears to have been the "closeout" MAP for the old series of AVs.

Hmmm, I did notice a higher $1,749.49 price on two of the online sites, American Musical Supply and zZounds. I'll happily take the savings, especially during this, ahem, taxing time of the year.

Thanks for filling in the blanks. Your posts are always informative and dead on accurate.

John
