Hey guys! First post here, and I need some help. Just recently came across one of my favorite guitars in Craigslist and I'm defiantly going to buy it if it's real. I've been doing a little research on fender series numbers and I know that the Jim Root tele is made in Mexico, and try have a different type of serial number. I believe they start with M or something? Also he listed it under "american made". Anyways, if you guys could take a look at this and let me know what you think, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks so much!
Nate

By the way, it does have a picture of the serial number.

Anybody?? Im thinking about buying this guitar, this week if possible. I just need to know if this is a real Jim Root Tele. I keep asking myself, why would somebody fake a mexican made tele, but I keep looking at that serial number, and trying to date it, and it just looks wrong.

Yeah I saw that. The serial number is 11085461. Maybe 11 stands for 2011 and they dropped tue "M". I don't know. I hope somebody that knows more can help.

It's hard to tell from those photos but it could be that someone is just trying to make it seem "American" instead of "Mexican" - it looks like there is space for an "MX" to have bee in front of the serial number. That could have been removed, along with the little "Made in Mexico". If for some reason these had been moved to USA production the serial number would have started with a "US" and it would have had "Made in USA" on it under the serial number.

If you can look at it in person you should be able to see where the "MX" and the "Made in Mexico" were scratched off. I would also make sure that Root's signature is on the back of the headstock. If not, then this is just a good fake.

Looks like nobody is biting, so I kept looking around and I found this, looks like it is USA and the serial is similar too.

Just call them and ask questions about it.
Otherwise the neck is lacking the signature and the string tree is too far from the lettering, which identifies the Mexican ones.

This one looks identical with yours, with the string tree being further, but it does have the signature on the back of the headstock.
With the amount of Chinese fakes on the market now be careful.

and this i found after I wrote the stuff above, and it points towards Chi fake

Looks like it could be a legit Jim Root tele but the missing MX and made in mexico decal raises alarm bells could be seller is trying to keep the price up by saying it is american made. As John C suggests check in person if seller is vague about it then walk away

So I just called Fender, and 11085461 doesn't bring back any results but you take the same number and put MX in front of it and it does in fact come back as a white Jim Root Telecaster. Do you guys think I should take a shot at this one?

Edit: I just emailed the guy and he told me that Jim Roots signature isn't on the back of the guitar....I don't know what's going on haha

He said that it does in fact have real active emgs and locking tuners, a long with all the paperwork for the guitar. I just don't see anybody making a fake and putting high quality hardware on it. I actually own a Chinese Les Paul. Tuners are crap and pups are more than likely epiphone. I think I'm gonna take a stab at this guitar. If it actually is indeed fake then oh well. I still have a nice guitar.

Good luck then. Go check it out, being on craigslist you can do that right? You have the les paul too, so you know what to look for in a fake.
Let us know how it turned out
Take care
