You want to waste time fixing a set of cheap ceramic pickups? Have at it. I call that "obsessing".

They might be pickups that have a particular tone. They might even have some weird sentimental value to the OP. Or, more likely, why the hell not? If someone can even save a couple of quid and try to rescue an otherwise perfectly usable pickup by doing five minutes simple work, why shouldn't they?

People fix cheap things all the time. That's not obsessive. If the OP wants to fix his pickups, he should go right ahead without being labelled as a nutter.

If he wanted to paint them purple and glue them back on sideways to try to draw the spirit of Hendrix out from the ethereal waves, that's his right. Well, okay, maaaaybe that's when you'd start thinking the term 'obsessed' could be used.

Thank you. I agree completely with "why the hell not":) Now, If I COULD do something to get a little Hendrix vibe going in my fingers, people could call me anything they want too. :D

The pickup? I just want to fix it because it is screwed up. I see no reason to trash an otherwise perfectly good pickup. Do people throw away paper money if it is torn or do they tape it back together and spend it? Why waste time on a dollar right? Nope, you slap a piece of tape on it and take it to the store. I have done most everything to a guitar except fooling around with ceramic magnets. It is a learning experience.

As for it being worth only $5.00 - If I can sell it for $5.00 that will be $5.00 more than I have now.

As for the guitar that it came out of, I am installing Gibson Humbuckers along with new 500K pots and a .022uF capacitor (that I pulled from a 1978 Tele Deluxe). I have a Strat neck lying on my work table, but am leaning towards keeping the Tele neck as it looks to be a good one.

I built one of these for my son several years ago and it is one of the best sounding and best playing guitars I have ever had in my hands. Seeing as I have been playing for 47 of my 57 years, that is a lot of guitars.

I have never said that I was a good guitar player OR a good singer, but I managed to get by and keep my guitars going. And, I had a lot of fun along the way.

Just messing around one day.

Very well put and I really like your playing. I think that it's better to try to fix something and learn in the process than to throw something away because it doesn't seem to make sense economically. You'd still have something going into a landfill site and be no further ahead in your skill set if you followed the $5 rule.

I got a wild hair and decided to go ahead and fix this magnet spacing.

Cleaned off old glue. Popped off magnets. Moved to correct position. Re-glued. (Took probably five minutes.) Put it back in guitar to make sure it still worked, then removed it to put in humbuckers.

This pickup sounds just fine. It has been my experience that people who are lacking in skills always try to blame the equipment.

Absolutely. It's my view that if you're any good, you can get a good sound out of pretty much anything - expensive gear does not automatically make better tone. I've heard amazing tones from cheap gear from great players, and absolutely horrid tones from guys with rigs which costs more than a small house.

I will say, however, that top quality gear usually does make it a lot easier to get that tone in your head and let you focus less on the sound and more on the music. I think we all eventually just gravitate towards the gear which enables us to get our natural sound out with the least effort.

Yes. Thank you for the encouragement earlier.

And yes, that is why I am putting in the humbuckers and the electronics that go along with them. I am not a big fan of single coils. I have one Standard Tele with Alnico single coils. That is enough for me. This one will be a humbucking machine. :)

I am replacing parts on my 1977 Tele Deluxe this month as well. I put new locking tuners on it, new string ferrules, new stainless steel saddles, and replaced two pots. Any old part taken off is put in its own little bag inside a bigger bag and placed in the case.

I think I am going to take it back apart and put a couple of caps on the volume controls. It loses a lot of treble when turning down the volume. I love this guitar, but I have almost worn it out.

I don't think the frets can go any lower, and I will NOT have it re-fretted. The fingerboard is 3/64 of an inch from the bottom of the low "E" string and 1/32 below the bottom of the high "E" String (nut was removed, lowered, and put back on). The frets are as low as I will ever be able to get them as well. But, this is the easiest playing guitar that I have ever owned. Breathe hard on the strings and you are playing a song. I can hear it playing itself in the case at night it is so easy. :D

I took a couple of hours last night and set it up after installing all the new parts. New saddles are a pain in the butt when the old ones were so in tone.

I suppose one day I will have to buy a new neck and put this one in the closest.

Anyway: People do not get on message boards looking for answers from smartalecks who think they know everything, but that's what most folks get. Every once in a while we come across someone like you who are willing to help and actually give advice we can use. I still get calls at all hours of the morning from people who are having computer problems. I get myself woken up, and I try to help them as much as I can. I also work on player's guitars. This is just the first time I have ever contemplated removing a magnet. I actually rather enjoyed fixing it. :) It will be wrapped and go into my box of spare parts.

Thanks for you help.
