Ewwwwww ....
Now I have cootie-phobia too.
That's disgusting, Martian.
In all honesty I'm surprised you still touch this man's guitars at all.
He must be an important friend to you.

Are you sure we can't convince you to try some yummy Scotch instead of that yucky naptha?

He is a very old friend and a hell of a nice guy; I know his whole family too. He's just a freakin' pig in plain English where his guitars are concerned.

Versus Scotch, naptha is the most efficient for me. It will kill more germs and remove virtually any crud and scuzz easier, it is safe on guitars, it leaves no lingering odor and is radically cheaper. I catch your point though.

I've never thought about catching something from a guitar but now I'm thinking about it. I keep my gear clean anyway because I care!

I never did either until after that episode. To this day, I can't forget it and am very conscious about handling 'nasty' guitars. FWIW, I've always kept my guitars super clean too.

Martian

Sounds like HPV. Maybe ZZDoc can chime in too?

Cheers

David

All I know is that I had to have five liquid nitrogen treatments for them from the dermatologist until they all ultimately went away. Live and learn!

Sure Wet Wipes will be ok... you'll be changing the strings anyway won't you??

If Rosewood board, then scrape the gunk off frets with plastic credit card edge, rub over with a Q Tip in alcohol and then dress with Lemon Oil.

Also, Lift the tone/vol caps off and gently brush the gunk in grooves with old toothbrush and washing up liquid and rinse in water.

BEWARE!! WARNING!! BEWARE

Wet Wipes will however - lift the Screen Printing on the Tweed Amp control panels!!

Scotch will leave the most delicious smelling residual aroma and if some doesn't make it all the way to the guitar, where's the harm?

I find that Glenmorangie 25 leaves a deep, rich shine with a complex, yet delicate aroma.
Glenfiddich 21 has a more muted gloss with a brighter aroma.
Finally, Dewars 18 leaves a dull finish with a very harsh and pungent aroma akin to lighter fluid.
CAUTION: Jim Beam White label will strip the finish and kill any bug residing on or in the underlying wood.

I preferably drink my Scotch whisky, and then I don't care about how gunky my guitar is...

I dont even know if they make it anymore but I still have a few small bottles of the Fender -Mist&Wipe - which used to come with the cleaning kit and also a small bottle when you bought a new guitar. I can't remember the last time I even polished a guitar but the S&M is great! Just give a few sprays and wipe down your whole guitar and the back of the neck. I think we all have been handed a guitar that was simply disgusting and just about impossible to play with gunked up strings and fretboard. That is one good habit I have and that is wiping down my strings after playing or I would be buying new strings every few days. Once you sweat them up if you do not wipe them down they will be shot and with the price of strings today it is worth the two minutes. Martian sorry to hear about your wart issue lol, all jokes aside it has been awhile hope all is good with you.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy buying a nice used guitar and spending the time to clean/polish, do a setup and return it to like new condition. Never had in mind that I was disinfecting it. I think more about the grocery cart I'm wheeling around that had a kid with a dirty diaper in it.

Now I have to take latex gloves with me to the store.

Thanks for making me think about that .... NOT!

BMW-KTM...see Howard Hughes wasn't so crazy after all, was he? I have a BMW R1100s, what's yours? Looks like I need a new battery before springtime. What's your advise as to kind and where to purchase?

About two years ago I found a growth inside my elbow where your arm touches the guitar, it grew like a golf ball and got infected real bad to where I had to have it surgically removed. Now, I have a few vintage guitars some of which look real rough and thinking back I bet that's where it came from.

Sorry... but I gotta call BS on this one... :!: :!: :!:

Warts are caused by a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV).

HPV, like many viruses, cannot survive without a host organism.

It cannot survive on a Guitar neck... or a toilet seat, let alone colonize and take root !

The conditions on a guitar neck (or under the frets) simply do not provide the necessary environment. This is not conjecture, the biochemistry involved is well understood.

You and your physician are trying to link cause & effect with the timing of handling your friend's guitar. But, it just doesn't work that way.

Though it is possible that warts may be spread from person-to-person, this is extremely uncommon. Any such transmission is skin-to-skin, and even then, you'd need a cut or lesion for the virus to enter the body. Still, that is not a guarantee that you'll develop warts - lots of people carry the HPV virus and are, and will remain, wart-free for their lifetime.

In all probability, you already harbored the virus and would have gotten the warts even if you hadn't handled that guitar.

Your doctor speculating the guitar might have been the cause was likely a bunch of gafaw, simply to placate you - people want answers to their ills.

If you got a wart, you have a greater chance of having them occur again, the body cannot be cleared of the virus once acquired.

Most people carry a form of HPV, it is pretty much part of the Human Experience, similar to most people carrying some form of the Herpes virus - ever get a 'Cold Sore' or mouth blister?... Well, that's Herpes (simplex II).

I just hate to see a Panic occur with people rushing out to spray their guitars with Lysol based on anecdotal misinformation. If your physician states otherwise, take my advice... get yourself another physician !

There is no need to disinfect a guitar whatever. Any organisms which may live there are the same you encounter daily with Door Knobs, Elevator Buttons, Steering Wheels, Telephones, Comp Keyboards, Amp knobs... even your TV Remote.

It's good for you to excercise your immune system once in a while rather than keeping it dormant by exposing it to nothing but a near-sterile environment !

If you do that, when something really big comes along, your immune system will be ill-prepared to deal with it.

Remember what Jim Morrison said: "No One Gets Out Alive !! "

cheers!
