Hi,

It would be great if you could help me:

As far as I know, the standard Fender "Wide Range" humbucker is bigger in size than e.g. the Seymour Duncan Antiquity Humbucker (http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/e ... 1_humbuck/).

What do I have to do with the opening in the pickguard if I want to replace the standard humbucker ?

Thanks for your help ;)

Hiya fella....

the wide-range bucker is defiantly bigger.... As far as I know there isnt a way to fill the pick guard back in!..

So you would really have to get a new pick guard... The Roadworn Player pick guard would do nicely im sure ( but im guessing thats what your trying to convert too!)
Im sure you could order one pretty easily on the net....

Well, its not as hard as you may think. But I would take the old one off and leave the wide range in it.... that way you could return it to original if you wanted.

All things being equal...(it almost never is! lol) you should be able to just do a trade.
Only thing I would be concerned about would be.... Is the routing in the body deep enough to take the SD?.....If it is your on easy street!....

Hope you do ok! Make sure you put some before and after pics up... :D

In my town it is hard to pick up a Fender Classic Series 72 Custom Tele to test drive. Today I drove a Fender Classic Series 72 Thinline Tele with the 2x Wide range humbuckers. Even though I liked the playability of the MIM Tele.. the pickups were good but not gig worthy IMO... I wondered what the $$ would costs for tuners upgrade and pickup upgrades etc.. even though the playability and light as a feather Thinline felt great.. I am going to just save the $2100 AUD for an American vintage Fender 72 Custom Telecaster. then it will not require any upgrades at all. :D

You can buy replacement WRHB's from places like "Telenator". Search for it. There are other places as well that will custom make or rebuild yours to your preferred type - Alnico 2, 3, 5, ceramic, etc. I think the cost would be reasonable.

You can also buy replacement pickguards to mount a typical size humbucker, which would work for you.

Personally, I would give the stock pickup a chance. It is supposed to sound different than a typical HB.

I have the '72 Deluxe and Custom reissue telecasters and for now the stock WRHB's are staying in. I particularly like the way the '72 Deluxe sounds, both pickups, individually and combined. On the '72 Custom I can see changing the potentiometer. Possibly getting a new or rebuilt WRHB from Telenator or another source.

You might want to check into the changing of the potentiometers, I believe to 500k for the neck pickup tone and volume. Many people have been satisfied with that modification and the improvement that they experience.

You can research on the Wide Range humbucking pickup modifications and find a lot of ideas.

Some people like them and some people don't.

You can buy a Squier Classic Vibe tele and mod it with a new pickguard that will fit a typical sized humbucker easily, because the Classic Vibe tele is already routed for the full size humbucker under the existing pickguard. They are very decent guitars as well.

The new pickguard on yours, along with new potentiometers would probably be a good route to go though. But don't forget to install 500k pots on the humbucker tone and volume controls or you will probably not be satisfied with the sound that the 250k pots that are supposedly in there, will give you. The 250k pots are in there for the single coil bridge pickup and that traditional telecaster sound.

In the end you won't have a '72 Custom telecaster reissue anymore, technically, I don't suppose. But you will have what you presumably want.

If you are not going to play it the way it is then, in my opinion, the only thing to do is change the pickup. I did that to my MIM standard tele that I couldn't stand the stock pickups in. I replaced that junk with a set of really nice Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro tele pickups and it went from being a guitar that I wouldn't play to being one of my favorite guitars.
