I find if I'm just sitting around,,, and pick
up my Tele,,, I tend to want to play,,,blues
or country... If I pick up my Gretsch 5120,,,
I tend to want to play Rockabilly,,, or Classic
rock,,, from the fifties...

Does that make sense to you... Or is it an old
folks thing ???

Sorry,,, not trying to hijack this thread...

I think you hit the nail right on the head. I like variety, and really, there's no need for Fender to scrap any of its offerings, but they might want to add something new to the mix. Actually, they really have already if you look at the variety of Teles and Strats.

Hah! That's kinda funny cuz back in the 60s when I first saw them I thought the same thing.

But they grew on me a decade later. Now I don't get excited by any other design. I only have eyes for Teles.

I read through this thread, then very reluctantly I voted, so's I could see what the results were.

Well, there's a shock outcome.

Lol, gotta be one of the lamest polls ever seen by mankind. I play a tele, it's got an extra middle, pickup, and a piezo bridge. (I better run before they come with torches!)

Anyways the only thing that I would change with the basic tele is that I would offer a contoured model. There's plenty of room to puttum in, and tehy'd be so much more comfy that way. Don't replace teh original though, and don't overcharge for contours becaus eif a strat is teh same price as a tele then u an add contours for free Fender!

By the way flamekaster he was being very sarcastic.

Seems like a thread meant to provoke - raw emotions, not serious discussion.

But saying that, hell no. The Tele is a great model, and such a versatile model also. As has been said, why would Fender discontinue a line that continues to be so successful?

Three of them are no, so I picked the one that makes you seem like your out of your mind.

That is - "ah, no"

It's funny.....when I bought my first Tele in 1970, there were tons more
SGs, 335s, Strats, Gretschs and Les Pauls around than Teles. Of course, the country twangers liked 'em, but it wasn't a real commonly-used guitar in rock circles. But, being a Clarence White fan, I went to the store to play one. It really felt great. Played great. And sounded terrifc. I still have that guitar, and numerous other Teles (and Strats, and acoustics, etc). But, far as I'm concerned, it's more versatile than just about everything else out there - still to this day (unless there's something new I'm not aware of).

...line 6 variax, but thats just cheating. And i'd need to do more tests to see if it really sounds spot on.

The Variax is a very cool guitar, from the electronics POV. The sounds are very good. The wood bits (IMO) leave a lot to be desired. I;d like to buy one and build it into Tele woodwork from Warmoth. They're offering Tele and Strat bodies cored-out to accept the Variax electronics. Something I think Fender should do, as well. A Tele-Ax would be great! The Vairiax electronics are very good. But (sorry Line 6) the guitars don't quite do it for me. Might be because I'm a Tele-guy. That being said, if Fender offered a Tele with those electronics on-board, I'd buy one, for sure!

Theres actually some places online, that will route, modify and install the variax system into your guitar (provided you send them the guitar and electronics) so that you can keep the stylings of your current guitar but have the functions of the variax. Dustin Kensrue of Thrice had this done (I'm pretty sure) to a telecaster deluxe build. This way he didnt have to change guitars or tunings live. He just turns a knob and he gets standard, baritone, drop and anyother tunings he needs. pretty cool concept. I think Fender should at least issue a VG tele to match the vg strat. I love the concept and would love to see it on a tele. Sorry to hijack the thread...

The VG is cool enough, but seems comparatively complex and expensive.
The Variax model that was being sold for a few hundred bucks has electronics as good as I'd need them. And I think Line 6 only has one iteration of electronics - they just offer it in better woodwork. What I DO like about the Variax. compared to the VG, is the elctronics are smaller, there's no additional pickup and the overall design is much cleaner. The VG looks cluged-up to me, with the Roland pickup and multiple control cavities. And it's way too heavy! Definitely not as clean a design as the Variax - which due to the pickup being in the saddles, would enable a proper Tele design without a bunch of bolt-on extra gear.
