Actually, the very first electric guitar was the frying pan. But anyway, you can't discontinue the tele! The telecaster gives probably the most attractive tone you can get from a guitar.

I think the good people at Rickenbacker would tend to differ with you.

:?: :?: :?:  Why would any one discontinue such a kick butt guitar??? I love telecasters.. and in fact my dream guitar is a 50' Broadcaster so i think that's a retarded question man. WHY? Also consider how much money fender gets to put in their HUGE Wallet at the end of the day. Notice.. Fender isn't suffering from the economy.. selling the awesome guitar that is the telecaster helps a ton.

The Telecaster was the first mass produced proper electric guitar.
A frying pan doesn't look like a guitar to me.

Hey! Let's get this right

People were making electric guitars in onesies and twosies in the 1920's. George Beauchamp's "Frying Pan" was the first electric guitar produced in a sizeable commercial run. It was a lap steel guitar of the type used in american roots music of the time. Go see "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou" to hear some music like that.

The first electric Spanish guitar produced in a sizeable commercial run was the Gibson ES-150. The ES part stands for "Electric Spanish" and the 150 part was the price in dollars. But for that price you got the amplifier, too.

And Leo Fender produced the Esquire, Broadcaster, and "Nocaster" before settling on the name "Telecasterl" Esquires had one pickup, or most of them did. Some had two. All of these guitars are very similar in appearance. But there were many electric guitars before Fender started producing. His innovations included the solid body, "bolt-on" neck, and the use of automobile lacquer as a finish. Actually, Fender was not the first to build a solid body guitar. Les Paul's "Log" for example dates back to 1941. But Fender made the solid body commercially successful.
