hmmm well they're two fairly different guitars. The sound is one of the bigger things. The tele has more of a twangy sound in the bridge position (i think this has something to do with the bridgeplate interacting with the magnetic field or something...read that somewhere i think). Anyways, also tele has 2 pickups so the standard tele's have 3 positions as opposed to the strat's 5. This is different on different models or can be modded (mine has a four way switch and a phase switch that gives it 6 sounds). The other obvious big difference is the body. It's generally kinda large, a little bulky and it's really up to you if you like the feel or not. Easiest way to find differences is just to play a strat and tele side by side. see what differences you detect. if you still like the telecaster after doing that, I say go for it. It's a great guitar that is extremely versatile. Keep in mind there are so many different versions of the telecaster, like the strat. Hope this helps.

hmmm, i really like the classic baja (the one with 6 sounds), the 62 Reissue, the american deluxe, and the 52 hot rod. Those would have to be my favorite stock models. The one I own is a custom project that i assembled from different telecasters and other parts (62RI body, SCN pickups, vintage 3 saddle compensated bridge, custom wiring, ebony fingerboard on CBS strat style neck) Basically its a mix of the 62, the American deluxe, and the baja.

I have one of each. The main difference to me is the sound. Especially since the Tele is not the standard Tele. It's a semi-hollowbody, and it has two humbuckers pickups. Makes for a whole different tone.

But......even the standard Tele has a different tone than a Strat.
