Well I compared a 52AV to a Classic Vibe today (silly comparison I know) but most obvious thing that struck me how much lighter the 52 was, wow! The CV50 was sooo much heavier, and the 52 was so nicely balanced as well.

But now Fender have brought out the new 2012 American Vintage series, does anyone know the actual differences Fender made to the new American Vintage 52 compared to the 'older' 2010/11 52AVRI? What justifies the extra cost, because they look very, very similar?

Lefty - from what I've read there are a bunch of small tweaks to the new AV models over the previous version (which ran from 1998 until the new ones were introduced in August).

Here's what I've read:

1. Revised neck shape - still a "U" but slightly thicker (but not as thick as a CS Nocaster).

2. Revised pickups

3. New finish - this "flash coat" nitro lacquer that is supposed to be thinner (and also doesn't have the poly undercoat).

4. Revised color - the "butterscotch blonde" is less "butterscoctch" more "blonde" and the necks have very little tint.

5. Modern wiring standard with instructions on how to convert it to vintage wiring - this is a big change as the old ones came with vintage wiring and instructions on converting them to modern wiring.

Fender put in a lot of research on these trying to get them from say 95-97% accurate to 99% accurate - it's not to say that the old ones were bad, they are just trying to up the game a bit.

Thank you very much for the info john, great response as always. I have read on another forum about the "flash coat" nitro lacquer and the fact that it is quite thin and more prone to flaking and damage. What this new vintage series sound like I don't know, but I'm in two minds whether to go for an older 52RI Tele, which you can still get and in some places at a discount due to the newer model releases, or plump for one of these new ones, the Telecaster 52 specifically.

Upon inspection of the original 52AVRI, I did like the low weight, supposedly down to the swamp ash body, and how nicely balanced the guitar was. The CV50 I also looked at, was so much heavier I was alarmed to find, I'm guessing partly down to the pine body.

Again, thanks for the excellent info.
