Any opinions?

Keith used a lot of different guitars during that era; he had a bunch of "used guitars" (we would now call them "vintage guitars" ) and custom-built guitars by UK builders like Zemaitas back then. However, it seems like he gravitated toward Teles most of the time. I would think any reissue-type Tele would get you close. I know he is shown using that black Tele Custom in a lot of the videos from Tattoo You but I think that one was more his workhorse stage guitar than a recording guitar.

Try doing a google search on Rolling Stones recordings - it seems like there are several competing sites that try to describe what Keith (and Brian, Mick T. and Ron) used on the various recordings of those eras. Unfortunately no one has done anything as comprehensive as Gilmourish or the Who gear site for the Stones.

I replaced the bridge pickup in my Affinity tele with a MIM tele pickup. It is pretty trebley. I have a Pignose 40watt with 2 6L6s and 3 12ax7s that gives me a real funky keef sound. I believe that any Fender style amp would give you that sound with a Tele trebley bridge. :D

Simple:

1. Take any Telecaster, play on the bridge pickup with tone knob on the guitar turned down to dial back the treble
2. Remove the 6th (lowest) string
3. Tune remaining strings to Open G
4. Learn to play those songs correctly
5. Play into any tube amp that is cranked up, OR use an overdrive pedal with a lower gain setting
6. If you want the echo effect, take a delay pedal and set it to a very short slapback sound

I'm playing the Keith parts on these recordings (they're a bit old already). Only effect is a little reverb in post. Playing straight into a 1973 Fender Champ.
