Dude... you really have to try them both. I love my Strat and my Tele, but for different reasons. Strat's got a smooth tone, great for mellow blues, rock, etc. The telecaster has an innately more aggressive, "Harder" tone to it. Good for blues (Roy Buchanan more than adequately proved that point), but I think it works best if you wanna get that nasty, angry type of blues sound.

Points to the strat for versatility.

The only way to be completely happy is to own both at some point.

Tele? Think Keith Richards.

Strat? Think Eric Clapton.

Simplistic? Yes, but it might help at a high level.

Oh Yeah!!
For me, and probably for these guys, its all about "feel" and much less about "tone."
That being said I prefer both the feel and the tone of a Tele over a Strat.

The key is trying to determine which guitar you like the feel of best.
And you probably won't be able to do that until you own both guitars.

When you eventually own both, one of these great guitars is going to find it's way into your hands alot more often than the other because you just like the way it feels as compared to the other.

Then you'll know "Its just that demon life has got you in it's sway"

Well, its simple when you consider that Clapton once played Gibsons and now sports his defining Stratocaster sans the tremelo bar to boot. I am a Tele guy through and through, but in this case, its better to get a stratocaster. It will cover all of your bases and if you get a clapton strat, you can still have that fat Les Paul/SG Humbucker sound. Unless your like me and put a frankentele together with three pups and a 5 way switch!

Played a Gibson Les Paul since 1972. Bit the bullet and got a Telecaster about 5 years ago and a Stratocaster 2 years ago (very understanding wife). Now here's the thing,
couldn't get used to the Tele, the maple neck drove me nuts. The Strat has a rosewood neck so it was slightly easier to play but still nothing like the Les Paul. Fast forward to 6 months ago and I have not put down the Tele, in fact it's my preferred guitar for everything (rock, blues, jazz, fingerstyle). The Les Paul and Strat sulk in the corner but their turn will come again.
Moral - buy as many as you can afford, you wont regret it.

Be sure to test drive a Blacktop Tele before you pull the trigger on one. 8)

Of course its all about what works for you but I will say(for me) the tele just gets the mojo working....But TBH as most folks here, I own both, but I always seem to come back to the tele when my soul needs a little lovin'.
With your budget have a look at the Classic 50's or 60's model, also the Baja player is really sweet.

I have a Classic 50's Tele that ive modded up the wazzoo, I can recommend them very highly.
And, alot of guys here are saying the strat wins on the versatility stakes..... Im not convinced of that. Although sonically, yes maybe the 3 PU's can conjure up a little more with the 2 and 4 positions ala Dave Gilmore. But as far as Musical genres or 'bases covered'...Tele all day long and twice on Sundays. Try a few out and trust your ears and your hands...they wont lie.

in the end.... why buy one when you can have two for twice the price?. :D
