I couldn't help myself... I ordered one last night from MF. It is going to be my wife's gift to me for Xmas, although she does not know it yet. Need to tell her before the big box arrives on my front porch in a few days.

I'm pretty stoked! Not sure about the 7.25" radius neck, but I'm sure it will be kick A!

Anyone else out there have one? Curious to hear any thoughts or impressions. My main amp is the super sonic 22 that I just bought a few weeks back. Yeah, I'm doing my part for the American economy! LOL

Cheers...

I'll embarrass myself and ask what AV stands for. V for vintage?

WANT.

Interesting shot! Just noticed that Keith moved the pickup selector switch to where one of the tone knobs is. Probably because it's right in the way on the upper bout there with the way he strums.

Have an awful premonition this will be my next guitar too!
Congratulations to Mrs Tone on her excellent taste, and let us know how you get on with it.

I'm off to lurk round the corner at ebay (just looking, honest)...

HEY, ALL!

Happy Holidays! So, Mrs Tone is quite pleased with herself. LOL...

OK, I got some questions about this model and hoping some of you might have answers. The Tele arrived today and while I was supposed to slap a ribbon and bow on it and stick it under the tree, I decided I should "inspect" the instrument. MusiciansFriend did a splendid over box job (put the Fender box in another box with paper stuffing.

I got it out and it's a beauty! It reminds me of the 52 RI I once had (and foolishly sold...). It feels lighter or maybe less dense than my American Special. I think I like the 7.25" radius.

I LOVE the sound of the WR HB. It has the warmth of my Gibsons, but is not so dark. Nice combo with the bridge.

Now, for the negatives... The bottom side was all scuffed (from shipping in the G&G case???), the high E string is almost off the fret board by the 17th fret, and the guitar buzzes like a MOTHER without my hands on the strings.

In regards to the string alignment and the buzz, is this normal for this model?

I have to say, and I hate to be negative, but I am disappointed in Fender USA right now. I had issues with my Super Sonic 22, as well.

Any input would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I called MF this morning and given all the issues, especially the neck, the recommendation was to send the Tele back and get a new one. Hope this one turns out better!

I hope it works out for you. I have been wanting a USA '72 Custom since before they Re-Issued them. I tried out an actual vintage "72 Custom" and it was my favorite (electric) guitar I have ever played. You can eventually get aftermarket to try to replicate the original WRH. I will mention that I had the same buzz problem with a MIM '72 Telecaster Custom that I returned ASAP.

I have been inspecting Squier and Fender set ups. From my experience most Fender (MIM) guitars off the shelf need a full set up. Honestly, I have found that Squier (MIC) are a lot better with set-ups out of the box. Maybe they figure that most people set up their guitar anyway so they don't worry about it too much. Personally I would love if Fender would really start making sure the set ups are at least decent and not buzzing and needing a new nut. I have owned 2 that have needed a new nut and went with the repair on 1 guitar and it fixed the buzz. Some shops do a set up but shops like Musician's Friend don't do this and that was probably why the set up was off.

I would love to hear a response from you about how the set up is on your new guitar. If it is still bad I would suggest going to a repair man and have him set it up and make sure the nut is cut probably. If all else fails I would suggest a Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom.

Hey, I appreciate the response SE11!

I hear you... The guy at MF was very excellent to deal with and if I only had 2 of the 3 issues, I would have sucked it up. The strings running crooked over the neck really threw me over the top. It was really his recommendation to just ship it back and try again. He even asked if I wanted to try a different model.

You bring up a great point - it's a new era. Where I live (D/FW TX), most of the local shops are gone. In Austin and San Antonio, where I lived for about 7 years, that is not the case. There was a great local shop up here called Larry Morgan Music. They did set up guitars, even the low end stuff. And, honestly, now that I think about it, this was my first online GUITAR order.

I'm not going to dog Guitar Center either. I have bought numerous guitars at various GCs and have never had a dog like this Tele. There is something to buying local (try before you buy). But, your point is well taken. If we all start buying over the NET, these guitar vendors are going to have to do a better set up out of the factory, or else everyone loses money. It was cool to be the first person to crack the box when I got this Tele, but I would have rather paid tax and walked out of a store with a guitar that was ready to play. Dunno? I guess if internet sales continue, the vendors might want to give vouchers for pro set ups. That would keep the locals in business at least.

I will definitely keep everyone posted when the new Tele arrives.

Thanks for the input!

You realize that Fender is in California and the change in climates to wherever these guitars are shipped has a massive impact on the setup? The guitar might have been perfect when it left the factory, but changes in temperature and humidity as it went from there to a distribution centre, to wherever Musician's Friend's warehouse is, through hot or cold shipping trucks to wherever your doorstep is. These are wooden instruments and as such they are affected by these regional climate and even seasonal changes. This is why most competent local music retailers offer a free setup before it is sold.
