Other than possibly a new color I wouldn't think that Fender would make another change. They did go more than 4 years before making these changes to the American Standard - it was introduced in January 2008 and the updates were announced around March 2012.

The 2012 American Standard Telecaster is an excellent instrument... no doubt.

But, I just can't get past the Belly Cut.

IMHO, the Telecaster was a classic, a perfect design in it's own right. Part of it's appeal and it's charm was that it was so basic.

That simple design stood the test of time... I've never heard of anyone complaining of sore ribs because they played a Telecaster. I have played the 'new' one and there's no tonal difference to it because of the cut.

But, I didn't like the way it felt without the guitar tickling you in the ribs, it's not just different... to me, it doesn't feel 'right'..

In the near 65 years of it's existence, the Telecaster has always been a steady seller for Fender 'as is'.

I suspect that with the renewed horsepower Fender put behind the Jaguar and the Mustang in response their 'Cobain' influenced rise in popularity, Telecaster sales may have leveled out or even faltered and some Marketing Guy decided to 'update' it to spur sales.

Not a good move IMHO, it's akin to re-issuing the '59 Cadillac without the Fins...

cheers!

My standard does not have the belly cut. Maybe because it is a 2011? It did have this though:

The contoured back was a feature offered only on the late '90s Pluses and the American Deluxes.

If your guitar lacks off the contoured back, it does normally sport the AlNiCo V pickups Fender used from 1986 to 2011.

American Standard Telecasters made after 2012 came with Custom Shop pickups (Broadcaster bridge - Twisted neck) as a standard equipment material - minus the Baja features such as the S1 switch and 4-way pickup selector.

Everyone can install a Baja mod to make the guitar more versatile.

I got a good price on mine. I have seen good replacement p'ups at guitar fetish. The stock ones are full of 60 cycle hum. The guitar has great resonance and a very playable neck. I really just love playing it.

My thoughts exactly. So the next question is whether it will continue to be called the "2012 American Standard," as if that's something special, or whether it will eventually be phased into just calling it the American Standard Tele again, in which case one will have to be slightly more careful on the used market to distinguish between 2012 and after and 2011 and older.

Of course, one should check serial #s anyway, but you know what I mean?

When I go to musiciansfriend.com next year, will I just see "American Standard Tele" without reference to 2012? Then I'll have to ensure they will send me the "new" one with the belly cut?

I suspect that "2012" part will go away as soon as they completely sell out of any remaining ones with the 2008-2011 specs left in their warehouse. I think they're just doing that to make it easier for someone to be sure they are buying one with the revised specs.

A "classic" Telecaster always used a slab body.

The tummy cut is primarily aimed for guitarists looking for more comfort.

The pickups hum due (usually) to bad wiring, ground issues and poor shielding.

With that 60 anniv. plate, it's a 2011. I'm not into the belly cut, and so I'm really glad I got a 2011.

I totally agree with you, the belly-cut doesn't belong to the Tele. With all due respect, it's like making the Strat with a slab body, it would perfectly playable but wrong. Imagine a Ford Mustang Boss 302 with tiny tyres, it will roll but it will be awful.

I can understand Fender offering models with the belly cut, but they shouldn't have done it to the American "Standard." Of course, some players will like it, and I mean no offense. But they should have created something like the "American Contemporary" or some better designation, leaving the Std. alone. BTW, the pups on the 2011 sound great to my ears, and I've been playing for 35 years. I've thought about the CS pups, but I'm happy with the stock pups.

Just picked up my first tele. It's a 2012 American standard in 3 tone sunburst an I love the contour body, but I'm the type who doesn't care about tradition as much as I'd the guitar plays great

Congrats on the new Tele--there's nothing wrong with the belly cut, just not my preference. It's still a great guitar.

yeah i just got a 2012/2013 std in black with upgraded locking tuners and a black pickgaurd, i really like the contour body and the pickups are fantastic, the broadcaster is beefy with plenty of bite and the twisted tele neck pu is a bit strat like but nice clarity they compliment each other so well, its a killer guitar
