if youve got a tele and a strat, both made from ash (perfectly probable), and you put a set of strat pickups in both of them, they will sound virtually identical in my opinion. in that case the only difference is visual. some will argue that the vast majority of 'tone' comes from pickups, regardless of what wood is used.

The wood actually plays a huge role in how a guitar will sound, for example swamp ash is a bit more 'vibrant' and has more treble than alder, which has more of a middle range. but from a strat and tele both with the same pups and wood, they will sound very identical, but the problem is that both different types of pickups have different pickup routing that needs to be done.
But what i feel that you're not taking into account is the different feel of the tele versus the strat.

if i was you, id get down the shop and try some strats. could save you lots of hassle and money. and to be honest for the type of music you want to play, i wouldnt be so hung up on wanting a tele bridge sound.

I have tried many of each type of guitar, and I am sure that it is a Telecaster that I want. To me, the tele is classier, it has more polished off and precise feel to it, but it still has that raw emotion that you can expect from a Fender. A Telecaster just oozes class.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say thanks for the help. I decided on a Blackout tele, and I'm getting it in February! The only thing that isn't 100% perfect is that it has 21 frets, but otherwse it is perfect.

it's beautiful

Doesn't part of the Tele sound come from that heavy brass bridge, with the strings through body? I would imagine that would make a big difference in tone between the tele and the strat models (especially with the strat trem system). I know that they each have their own distinct sound and feel, and even with the same pickup configuration, I believe they're going to be entirely different creatures.

*** edit*** Congrats on your new telecaster!***edit***

thanks Jeff! I honestly don't know enough about string through vs. tremolo to speculate on this topic, but it would make sense, being as the strings are vibrating in different ways and touching different things. As for a brass bridge, I thought that tele bridges were all chrome. :?: is it plated brass? b/c I know that tune-o-matic (Les Paul) bridges are plated brass.

I looked up the info for a Fender Tele bridge: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Telecaster-Bridge-Kit-100159089-i1130091.gc?source=4WWRWXGP&cagpspn=pla, and the specs say "chrome plated steel"

The bridge and bridge-pieces I replaced on my Warmoth Telecaster copy were definitely brass, but they weren't Fender standard parts. Regardless, the bridgepieces on the telecasters contact a fairly large, dense metal plate through which the sound is transferred to the body of the guitar. The string through body design means that the strings approach the bridgepieces from a high angle, resulting in a lot of pressure directly down on the bridgepieces, and into the body.

I don't have a genuine fender telecaster (Warmoth copy), but the body is ash with maple cap, so it should be similar (I'm not certain how the roswood neck/ebony fingerboard affects the tone compared to maple). My Squier CV 60's strat probably doesn't match up with an American standard, and I know that the bridge block uses zinc as opposed to steel. Zinc being less dense, it doesn't transmit energy as well. Still, my general observation is that even unplugged, the Telecaster has a brighter, harder tone than the Strat. When I've played around at the music store, I got the same impression from the real Strats and Teles. I'll have to go back again and do the American standards side by side (unplugged sound test).
