Hey Fender forum!

So I don't own a Fender (I have a Les Paul) but I've been considering getting a Tele for a while now. As my name indicates I am a huge fan of Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page is my favorite guitarist ever, second is David Gilmour) and I'm wondering what type of Tele is right for me? I want a maple fretboard first of all, (yes i know Jimmy Page had rosewood on his dragon) and I would like to have 22 frets, I can't stand 21. I want a vintage tone, but all the vintage models have 21 frets and rosewood! :x I have scoured the fender catalogues and I can't make heads nor tales of what model is what, and they differ from one and other. I also would like something with three pickups and a five way switch, the same way the strat does if possible. Please help!

22 fret maple board with 3 pups doesn't leave you with many choices. Maybe only this one...

Well, I'm still pretty new here, but the best match for the Tele you describe is the MIM Deluxe Series 'Nashville' Telecaster produced in the late 90's to mid 2000's. It is not an exact match as I don't believe it was offered with a Maple Neck option, and it has 21 Frets. But it has 3 single pups and a 5-way switch.

I own an MIM Deluxe Nashville Tele, but it was converted to standard Tele (2 pups, 3-pos switch) by it's PO before it was given to me.

Still, it is an excellent guitar and several 'experts' who have seen/played it have said it is the equal and perhaps superior to many MIA Teles from the same period they have played.

cheers!

Cool... Thanks for the correction !

Too bad it's no longer available in Arctic White though... that color with a Red Tortoise pickguard looks great ! (biased of course...)

cheers!

So far If i had to choose today, I'd go with the Nashville, but it has 21 frets.

The reason I don't want the Modern Player's Tele is b/c it has a humbucker. to me a fender with a humbucker is like using a Ferrari to haul half a ton of gravel. If I have a tele it has to have single coils or a hot rail. Sorry if I'm being too specific, but I want this tele to be perfect. I have lots of time anyway. this won't be in the budget for a while.

Butterscotch is right... there's always the Custom Shop.

But, Jimmy Page didn't need 22 Frets on the Telecaster that Jeff Beck gave him when he recorded "Stairway to Heaven".

Just sayin'...

cheers!

Oh I know, but I'm not Jimmy Page. I wish I was, but I'm not

And isn't custom shop expensive as all hell?

If you've got to have that middle pickup try to find a 1998 American Deluxe Tele - they had that "Nashville" layout for about the first year or so they were out (they changed back to 2 pickups sometime in 1999, I just don't remember if it was January or mid-year). You could also go back a bit further to the Tele Plus version 2 that was made from mid-late 1995 through early 1998.

Because Telecasters have a different, brighter, (hotter?) sound, whereas strats have more middle.

I've hear it phrased that Teles F*ck while Strats make love.

Hey, LoverofLed!

I've owned a few Teles over the years... Probably the hottest one was a Tele-Sonic. They were US made back in the late 90s and I really loved it. I sold it after getting my first Les Paul (well, REAL, Les Paul, that is). They were mahogany bodies with rosewood necks and I think 22 frets. I wish I had kept it!

I'm not sure of your budget, but you might consider a 72 Custom (AVRI or MIM) or 72 Deluxe (MIM) if you want hum buckers. I just ordered the AVRI 72 Custom for myself (as an Xmas present from my wife... LOL). I can't wait to get it!

Best of luck in your quest.

Oh, yeah, here's a link on Jimmy's Tele

Cheers!

if youve got a tele and a strat, both made from ash (perfectly probable), and you put a set of strat pickups in both of them, they will sound virtually identical in my opinion. in that case the only difference is visual. some will argue that the vast majority of 'tone' comes from pickups, regardless of what wood is used.

yes teles are known for being bright and twangy at the bridge position, but thats all. this is likely how the pickup is voiced, so okay a strat bridge pickup probably wont be as twangy, but unless you're playing clean you wont notice it.

if i was you, id get down the shop and try some strats. could save you lots of hassle and money. and to be honest for the type of music you want to play, i wouldnt be so hung up on wanting a tele bridge sound.
