Hey guys :) I've owned Telecasters and you may have seen me on the forums in different places. Well I recently bought a 2008 American Standard Stratocaster in Sienna Sunburst that is made of ash wood her she is:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=80094

Well I dunno I just haven't been feeling it like I would a Tele (meaning it just doesn't feel right to me) I put an ad up on Craigslist for either an American Standard (Series) Telecaster in Sunburst or an American Deluxe Tele in Aged Cherry Sunburst or Sunburst. So my question is this. What years should I aim for? I know they used different finishes, saddles, bridges, neck radius on different years/models.I know it's about what I think/preference ,but I just wanted other peoples input about what years these guitars really had that Tele twang and feel and how the 2012 American Standards are. Thanks :)

I have a couple thoughts.

It may be more beneficial for you to sell your Strat separately and then look for your Tele, or at least list your Strat as a 'Buy or Trade'. This opens up your 'market' to those who may be looking for a Strat, but lacking a Tele to trade. Trade only for a special Tele - trade up ! The 'emotional attachment' (and subsequent over-valuation) many may have for their Teles could mean less bargaining power for you.

It also wouldn't hurt to expand your possibilities by also considering MIM and MIJ Telecasters. Many of these are very fine instruments... on-par, or sometimes even exceeding, MIA Teles. And you'd likely pocket some cash in the bargain.

As you know, it's much more about how it plays than where it came from.

Good Luck !

cheers!

Thank you :) I put the guitar up for $800 or trade for an American Standard Tele. I have only seen my Strat used on ebay 2 times in the HSS config and the ash/sienna sunburst one is $919 and the other $1069. And I just want an American because of preference. I like Mexican and $@! Fenders ,but I've always had American. They are great guitars it's just something feels off to me when I play them kinda like how the Strat isn't a Tele and it feels wrong to me. I'm not being a snob I just know how I feel when I play if that makes sense? :)

Well, I'm not sure it does make sense. I bet if you were blindfolded and played a dozen of each you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, and that's starting with a 50/50 chance.

I'm not picking on you... I bet most of us would be the same.

I own an MIM Tele and a MIA Strat and the quality seems same-same to me, given the differences in model. No complaints for either of them.

But, I chose an MIA when buying new simply because the existing prejudice about MIMs may cause greater value-retention on the MIA... But, it also cost me twice as much going in and so the arguement could be made that the MIM is actually a better deal.

In the end, it's your money and your guitar. You don't have to justify your wants to anyone.

Good Luck !

cheers!

I actually feel MIA and MIM guitars sound about the same (pickups wise). It's more of a neck and like you said value over the years kinda thing. I would gladly own a MIM body and electronics guitar with a American neck and be happy :) MIJ have the best necks IMO. I just meant it as like when I'm playing the Strat it just feels "wrong" in my hands even if lets say it has the same neck as a Telecaster. The Telecaster would feel "right" to me not because one is better than the other. That's just how I feel about MIA vs. others. But yeah you are right I don't have to justify my wants and it's nice to hear that :D

Is $800.00 for the guitar with a Fender TSA hard shell case and the tremolo arm a fair asking price? Here is my ad any other suggestions?

I haven't played a MIJ guitar, but I have a MIC MP Jaguar and the neck finish is perfect. My MIA Tele is a slop job by comparison. My Jaguar has the smoothest neck, sides by the frets, finish I have ever experienced. The only downside is how crude my Ibanez, Gibson LP ,and MIA Tele feel beside it.
