I've played guitar for a long time and have always enjoyed my Fenders. Lately though, I had an idea about a slightly modified body shape for a Telecaster and wanted to run it by the readers here.

What if the tele body was thickened say by about 3/4 of an inch, and then given the rounded edges and rear cutaway like you get on a stratocaster?

I love the feel of a strat, and the sound of the tele, so in essence the new design would be sort of a hybrid of the two. Has anyone ever seen a tele like this? What do you think of the concept?

Hello Bonash,

Making the body 3/4" thicker,
Man that would be a heck of a plank.
I've never seen a solid body guitar
that thick. But who can tell, build a
prototype and share the pictures.
I think the rear relief is a good idea.
Best of Luck.

Cheers.

Hey Bonasch: I once had a Tele '72' Deluxe. It had a Strat headstock with a cutaway on the back of the Tele body. I bought it used. The only thing is, I didn't like the two chrome humbucking pickups after a while as it sounded too jazzy and didn't have that Tele bite.

I eventualy sold it on consignment for more than I paid for it and bought a Tele Custom Classic. On reflection, I'm sorry I let it go as it would have been a good second guitar with a different sound. You can check it out on the Fender products on this site plus the price or look at a Fender catalogue at your nearest Fender dealer.

Ken :D

I like your concept. Are you thinking of adding a cap for the additional thickness or having a solid piece of wood for the body? The relief on the back like the Strat's have would be a welcome addition. Love my Tele, but I don't really like the hard edge - I've been thinking about having that mod done.

The rounded edges would make for a nice variation too.

Bolt on neck or neck through?

I'm starting to drool just thinking of the possibilities...

Why bother making it thicker? Maybe just the relief with rounded edges. Throw in the Players Baja switching on whatever pups turn your crank. Keep it light and comfortable...with balls to go!
