I recently picked up a MIM Standard Tele for a really good price, it's a 2011 sunburst with the anniversary plate and the quality is flawless but the pickups sounded harsh , no sweetness.

I ordered up some Custom Shop Nocasters and when it came to fitting them I noticed the black cables from the stock ceramic pickups were both connected to the (paint shielded) body before going to the pot. The bridge also had a lug coming off the black wire which went around one of the adjustment screws, this is the part that's confusing me, what's it for?

As it stands I just fitted the Nocasters identically to the stock pups, ground lugs and all, it sounds perfectly good but I'm curious as the wiring diagrams I see never mention this.

Thanks :)

As I can understand your question , all of those wire are for connecting all ground together.

Thanks for your reply, I can understand why the ground is connected to the shielded cavity but I'm not totally sure why it also connects to one of the bridge pickup screws.

After doing some more reading I suspect it's because the stock pickups do not have the metal baseplate so the lug would be to ground the bridge plate and strings via the screw.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yes - the metal base plate normally grounds the Tele strings/bridge via the pickup height screws. No plate = need for new ground contact.

That said: it's never wrong to ground a bridge (strings) via a separate wire - you never know who switches the pickups next, chooses ones without the base plate and then complains about humming issues

Thanks for the clarification, I assume there's no problem with having the extra earth connection on the same wire though?

I'm a wiring noob so all this is new to me, the guitar sounds absolutely fine so I'm guessing it's all fine :)
