I have to confess... I'm tangled up with the idea of building another tele. Just a good ol' vintage style tele. I'm hovering over a few auctions in the bay trying to get a deal on a body and neck. Man, GAS is a killer!

Well, I got roped in again... I'm planning on building a moderately accurate 65ish telecaster clone. I just won a neck on ebay. An MJT finished Allparts TRO-FAT neck... I have one of the chunky Allparts necks on a strat of mine and love it... but it's big! Anyhow, that same strat is finished in Ice Blue Metallic and I thought I'd go for a matching tele sibling. My other tele has a humbucker in the neck and while I love it, I really kind of miss just a plain ol' tele neck pickup! So the project begins...

OMG, I haven't seen something that ugly since my drinking and performing days, LOL.

Actually, I have the surf green SCX2 so greens work for me. Best of luck, and not too many gremlins :P getting her built. That neck is beautiful. I have a rosewood neck on my tele and have no maple fretboards on any of my guitars. Not a judgement, just a preference. Visually and aurally.

 Yeah, it's not likely to win a sexiest tele competition but I actually really like the color.

I have one maple necked strat and love it but I just love the feel of rosewood... and I think it mellows the tone out a bit which is fine for tells. I had a maple necked MIJ tele years ago, and while there were no doubt other factors at play, I found it to be very unforgiving and "sharp" sounding... the tele has enough bite (IMO) without accentuating it. It's all just a matter of opinion, and thankfully, the sky's the limit as far as build options.

I found one of the new U.S. '63 Vintage Tele RI neck pickups and am using a pickup from a U.S. '62 Tele Custom. I'm looking forward to giving them a test drive! Nothing too radical planned for the rest of the build... though I'm curious about the 4-way option. Does that require special pickups or short change me any of the traditional (60's) tele tones? I'm not really interested in the super bassy tone like the '52 RI's come stock with. I want to make sure I have a "regular" neck tone, bridge tone, and neck/bridge combo... what is the 4th tone like? Any thoughts on whether it's worth it or not?

The neck is supposed to arrive today, the body tomorrow. I've been busy aging the metal parts using a muriatic acid double boiler. I have a small plastic bucket with 1/4"-1/2" of muriatic acid in the bottom, then I put the parts in another smaller tuppy and float that...the parts never touch the acid. I "simmer" them for about 1/2 hour and then remove, let simmer for another 1/2 hr then rinse. Aside being heinously toxic, it's working great. CAUTION if you try this technique be fully aware that this is some nasty stuff... it'll burn eyes, skin, lungs and probably cause cancer... it's no joke. Not to mention the problem of disposal... which I haven't figured out a plan for. Being something of a hippy, I'm not down to bury it or dump it in a far corner of the yard. Anyhow, it's a fast process and it's working but it certainly ain't the greenest of methods.

I'll get some pics of the neck and tuners posted once it arrives and I install them. I have one more phony Fender decal left over from my last tele build project so I'll be adding that... I can hear the nay-sayers now. I'd never try to pass it off as a "real" tele for resale, and have no intentions of selling it anyway. I just want it to look like an authentic tele (or closer anyhow) for my own purposes. I'd never be able to afford a CS tele or a vintage Ice blue '65 tele so this is as close as I'll be able to get... the new American vintage models are nice (and a little more affordable) but I don't care for the color choices or vintage spec necks. I really like taller frets and a honkin' fat neck shape.

The body showed up this evening... I'm super happy with it. The body and neck are super snug and it looks fantastic... assuming you like boogersnot green (and I am) At certain angles it looks far less green though... more like a heavily aged Inca Silver. I honestly don't know if I could tell it was Ice Blue if it wasn't for the wear through the top coat which exposes it here and there.

I'm busy with finals this week so am probably not going to get right after it, but hopefully by New Year's it should be done. I have to order and age some parts between now and then but the plan is to do so, get it assembled, and drop it off to my tech for a nut install and final set-up... I want to time it so it's at the shop over my Christmas break, as I'm going to be skiing in Colorado. 8) Would be sweet to come home and find it ready to rock!

UPDATE: I've slowly been aging parts as they roll in... Monday is the big parts delivery, everything but the nut. It'll probably take the rest of the week to age and assemble stuff but by next weekend it should be coming together nicely.

Well, things are pretty well together... TA-DA! I think it looks pretty darn killer... just need to drop her off to have the nut installed. One of these days I need to figure out how to install them myself. The lighting was a bit off in the photos, the house is pretty dim even with the lights on so the cameras flash went off. The headstock looks browner than it really is too, though it is more amber than Fender's vintage tint... looks like it's been hanging out at a smoky bar. Have a look-see...

Those are beautiful... and despite what the purists may say, I like the tummy contour. That's one of my favorite new Fender colors to come along in a while. I really like the discontinued blue agave and sage green metallic that were on some MIM's years ago.... and I like Candy Cola, and, and,

Anyhow, congrats on the new guitar and of course post some pics when she arrives!

The white truck brought it right on schedule at 10 am, Sweetwater set it up perfect as it was even in tune when i pulled it out of the box. It looks "Marvelous" and the two pick ups are exactly what i wanted. My good friend who is an avid Stat player and plays late fifties and early sixties stats was impressed, he say's man that Bridge pickup could slay a small dog! Anyway I love it and i wanted the tummy cut because i'm a chair player and it allows you the same angle as the stat and not get poked.

Next i need to figure out how to post my pictures?

For better or worse, I use photo bucket. Oncce you upload it gives you a nice image url to just copy and paste into the forum.

I've always used ImageShack for the same reason... and now that I know how it works, I don't care if something comes along that's better. The copy and paste feature is nice for the forum. I know the Gibson site has a different picture upload process, but gain, it's just a copy and paste.

More importantly, glad you're loving the new tele... I'm sure we'll get to see some pics sooner or later. Til' then, enjoy!
