Actually, a straight-off-the-shop Affinity is a playable & priceworthy guitar. No need to think you can't play it without mods.
Anyway, the price of any serious modding rapidly brings you to the Classic Vibe price class, and the CV's are ranked quite well. If you really feel the Affinity won't be good enough, I'd say wait and save a little more money for a guitar you're comfortable with right from the start.

Small and cheap "mods" (or rather, some basic things for any new guitar) would, IMHO, be:
1. Total set up for the guitar to suit your preferences and style
2. A new TUSQ nut (makes a BIG difference compared to those soft plastic nuisances...), and
3. Cosmetics; changing the knobs, pickguard etc; to something you like better
(Note: #3 has no effect on the playability or sound of the guitar, but makes a heck of a difference on the player...)

I had an affinity tele in the early 00's that I loved to play. I believe the body is a tad slimmer and of course the quality of the wood is not as high in addition to probably having more pieces of wood in the body. Even with that being said, that doesn't mean there aren't some gems that sound spectacular as well as the occasional dud (which can happen with any company regardless of price). At the end of the day all that really matters is that you like what you hear and are comfortable with what you're holding in your hands. I'd rather have a spectacular Squier than a dud Gibson! Find the one that makes you grin, and experiment with it over time, trying different pups, string gauges (have proper set up to avoid damage to neck), and so forth. The amp you use is important too, a bad sounding amp can ruin even the best sounding guitar's tone.
