I just bought a 2007 Telecaster 72' Deluxe, used, and while going through it I noticed that the low E string was nice and straight going down the finger board but as you went over from low to high the string spacing was off to the point of the high E string was right on the edge of the finger board at the 21st fret. Was just wondering if anyone else has had this same problem. After thinking this through for a few hours I'll tell you what I did to solve the problem. First of all, I think that fender should have used a 2 1/16th spacing at the bridge when they put this guitar together instead of the 2 1/4 spacing that they used (way too wide for the neck). Not only that but they started off right from the low E string because it had the right space from the string to the edge of the finger board all the way down the neck. But as you go down the spacing is too much because the high E string is right on the edge by the time you get to the high E string. The only way i figured out to solve this problem was to replace the bridge plate with an old plate I had off of a Carvin hardtail "Bolt" with a 2 1/16th spacing. I used fishing line for a mock up with the new plate and nice Carvin saddles. I just used both e string saddles for the mock up but it ended up that if I started with the string through hole lined up perfectly at the low E it worked out perfectly that I had the same distance on both from the edge of the finger board to the string all the way up the neck. The only problem was that I couldn't line up the hole by the time it got to the high E so I just elongated the high E and the B string through holes just at the top of the guitar just enough so that i could get the strings through. Anyway I had to drill a couple of holes to mount the plate but the spacing is now perfect.

Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you solve It?

Thanks, A bit long winded but I wanted to make sure
you could understand the issue.

A good set up by a qualified luthier would fix that

Sounds to me like the only thing that needed to be done was to loosen the four neck bolts and realign the neck. Pretty common problem, pretty simple solution.

Well, I thought of that but the low E side was perfect and any twisting of the neck would have thrown that off. It was just a matter of the wrong string spacing. Changing the bridge plate took care of it. Thanks for the input... sorry i lost you mate.

Standard string spacing in 1972 (and for reissues) was 2 7/8". In my opinion, you ruined a perfectly good guitar whose problem was only a minor neck alignment and which could have been fixed by any competant luthier. Even you could have fixed it correctly instead of doing the butcher job you did. These statements right here tell me that you had no clue how to really fix the problem:

"The only problem was that I couldn't line up the hole by the time it got to the high E so I just elongated the high E and the B string through holes just at the top of the guitar just enough so that i could get the strings through. Anyway I had to drill a couple of holes to mount the plate but the spacing is now perfect."

Congratulations.

That "repair" is like a surgeon using a butcher knife to do open heart surgery.

Bill,

Reading this post remnded me, I'm looking for a replacement bridge for my '79 Strat. The neck is worm thin (more narrow) and I'd like to find a bridge that won't cost me an arm and a leg (i.e. Callahan's $165.00 replacement bridge V/N Model Strat Bridge
2 7/32 mounting spacing with 2 1/16 string spacing).

Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I think Callahm may be the only company to make such a conversion bridge for a Strat. I'm not familiar with any others. Sorry.
