Note that the list of players who have used Teles for lead includes only those who make original music...that is, they are not attempting to reproduce some else's sound.

So, that said, if you want to do, say SRV LIKE SRV you most likely need a Strat...on the other hand, if you just want to play some great blues..a Tele will give you all you need...and then some!

Then, it's up to you to do the rest.

This is a pretty interesting question. From my point of view it's all very subjective. It depends on many, many elements.
1. What kind of music are you playing?
2. What kind pickups you have?
3. What is your playing style?

There are lots of people who have played or play lead guitar using a Telecaster.
Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John 5, Albert Collins, Danny Gotton, Jonny Lang, Andy Summers, Alvin Lee, Greg Kock, Brad Paisley and me quickly spring to mind. Also one of the very best Tele players I've ever seen live is Stacy Mitchhart.

It's all a matter of personal taste. With my Tele I can play pretty much any style of music.

I'm mostly a Strat player, but having said that I'm loving playing my home built Andy Summers Tele. You can do a lot with tone knobs and some over drive. Yah, I think you can play lead guitar on a Tele.

We're all trying to find THE sound we hear in our head and nothing will do until we have it.

Definitely not.

I'm curious why you believe that Tele's can't be used for lead guitar? What's your logic? I'm pretty curious. I disagree with you, but I'm interesting in your reasoning.

Though I dg the photo, I don't think of Kieth Richards as a lead guitarist.

KR is a "minimalist."
I've never seen anyone actually be successful in copying his style.
It's not like you're hearing Eric Clapton playing on "Little Red Rooster" on "Flash Point" from the Steel Wheels Tour.
But Keith does occasionally play lead guitar - in his minimalist style.
The Twickenham show is one of the best concert videos ever made
Great camera direction, great sound, great performance, and Four Flicks upconverts to 1080p perfectly, which can't be said for all non-blu-ray discs.
If you are into the Stones and want to see lead guitar played on a telecaster the KR way, get Four Flicks and watch:
"Satisfaction" at the Twickenham stadium show on "Four Flicks".

This reminds me of the baseball coach who asked the new ball girl to bring a bucket of baseballs over to him. He looked in the bucket, and said "These are curve balls, I wanted fast balls" and she apologized and ran to get the other bucket.

It's how you play the guitar, not the guitar. But, for an example, please type in Danny Gatton on YouTube.
