I was going to post something snarky here but changed my mind.

The fact that you're asking this question indicates that you've gotten some ideas about "lead" and "rhythm" guitar that might impeded your progress as a player.

The fact is this: a guitar is a guitar, and anything with six string that stays n tune can be used to play lead, rhythm, fingerstyle, slide, whatever. ALl the preconceived notions about what guitar is right for what are nothing but barriers to getting better

Yes, you can play "lead" on a Tele, or anything.

I don't believe I could think of a better reply to this question than this.

Absolutely perfect.

If there is a electric guitar that can lead, it is the telecaster. Most el. guitars aren't lead guitars, more a melody instrument, a telecaster is the closest to a lead guitar

Look up, find, and listen to some Jimmy Page (the first album or 2 from Zepplin), Jeff Beck, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, and James Burton (to name a few) for the answer to your question...

The solo from Stairway to Heaven.

(As well as the already mentioned first album.)

Plus David Lindley's proved you can play lead guitar on ANY guitar.

Guess I'm like the bumblebee who has been proven to be aerodynamically unable to fly, but does anyway because it doesn't know better, since I do both on my Tele!
