Hey guys,
I have been looking at buying a Telecaster for a while now, and have been perusing eBay and various other online market places to find a good deal (I'm a student, so as much as I'd like to, buying one new is a little out of my price range now.)

I have come across a few so far but this one caught my eye.
I am in the process of getting some more photos sent and the serial number also, but was wondering if there are any tell tale signs from these photos that I would be buying a fake?

I've been reading a few articles about spotting a fake and have had a fairly decent look, but couldnt really pick up on anything major. I noticed the 'Telecaster' printed on the headstock was a fair bit larger than others I have seen, and also that of my friend's Tele, but thought that may just be a variation between models/years.

This is the text from the seller in the ad :

'Two-piece Ash body with Rosewood top (centre joint; 3 and 3/4 pounds before fit-out). This body was hand built in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. (Not in a Fender factory). Rolled edges. Satin lacquer with a little relicing on the top which can be seen in pictures. Has a nice warm look.

Fender 72 deluxe neck (2011 Mex); tinted satin nitro; thick C profile; nice grain with mild flame on the back. '

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

The answer to your question of whether this is a real Fender or not is staring you in the face.

It is a nice looking guitar, though.

I started to post saying that "I would call this a 'parts guitar' and not a 'fake' since the seller is telling you where some of the parts came from" but upon second look I'm not so sure.

The neck clearly isn't the neck from an MIM '72 Tele Deluxe - those had Strat headstocks and a bullet truss rod adjuster. Similarly it isn't the neck from an MIM '72 Tele Custom - while they had the traditional Tele headstock shape they also had a bullet truss rod adjuster. For some reason I thought that FSR Tele Deluxe from two years ago that did have the MIM Standard neck on the Tele Deluxe body used the spaghetti logo instead of the CBS logo. I'm not sure just what this is, but at least the seller is trying to state that it is a parts guitar; it could be that the neck is also not from Fender and has a fake '70s-style decal. It could be that this was a Fender neck that was refinished since the MIM reissues aren't done in nitro lacquer (and a real '72 wouldn't have been nitro either - except for the front of the headstock).

It is a nice looking guitar, and ev

Thanks a heap guys,

I was unsure about the body and thought maybe being 'hande made' was something to do with being a custom shop. Anyway, yeah I suppose that was fairly obvious haha.

He has sent me some more pics of the headstock and input jack.

The guitar is selling for $600 and is interstate so I won't be able to play it until the deal is done.

A bit of a gamble that's for sure, but i do love the look of it.

For $600, I'd buy it.

I'm not sure I'd go $600, but I would definitely buy this one. Thanks for posting the other neck shots - that does look like a legit 2011 MIM Tele neck. As I mentioned in my other post it's just not from the '72 Tele Deluxe or the '72 Tele Custom - unless it was from that FSR version from early last year that used an MIM Standard neck on the '72 Deluxe body and I was just mis-remembering the headstock decal they used on those.

I would offer $500 and see where you wind up price-wise. Also that price would depend on the pickups in the guitar - expensive boutique pickups would help justify the $600 price.

As others have said, not a fake but a very nice partscaster it looks like. Gorgeous guitar, if it plays like it looks seems like a keeper. Good luck. :)

Well the thing here for me would be...do I want a genuine Telecaster? If that is not an issue for you than perhaps the 'parts-caster' will make you happy for $600...it is a nice looking guitar but how does it play and what are the pickups and what are they like?
and what a shame to proudly display your guitar after buying it to have others tell you it's a fake...the headstock does boldly say 'Fender Telecaster' not 'parts 'o caster'
$600. is a sizable amount of money in my books with todays economy...for me, my money would be saved and spent on a genuine Fender Telecaster that absolutely would cause you know buyers regret overtime. Good luck making your buying decision :!:

With the luxury of having 6 or 7 genuine guitars, I'd buy this on looks alone. Anything else could be sorted down the line. As an only guitar, maybe not.

I wouldn't buy it if I were you. You could go to a guitar store and pick up a used American Standard Tele from $600-$800. That's what I would do because $600 for that just seems unreasonable to me :)

If it were I, $600 is a bit too much for a Partscaster which is what it is, I'd offer him $350 which I think is more inline. That's the going price of an average MIM Telecaster.

Not sure what the view is from your side of the pond (I'm in UK) but websites over here dont recognise the serial number on back of headstock as a legit Fender Mexican serial

Nice guitar looking guitar though - good luck whichver you decide

Hey!
Wondering if the guitar is a fake or not is not favorable starting-point when looking for a $500 - $700 Telecaster. Do not make the mistake falling in love with the first Tele being on hand. Try «www gbase com» or equal.
