Ok I got my used Tele in today and noticed the neck pup had a pick in the pickguard inside the opening where the neck pup is. I then noticed it was being held in place by the pick and without it it wobbles and I don't mean slightly I mean wobbles. Turns out underneath it is this type of setup:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-American-S ... 53ef51a290

Obviously not meant for a single coil pup. Well how do I stop the huge wiggle? I hate having to have it shimmed with a pick :c It may even be the pickgaurd isn't standard c.c

Hmm - this is that Chrome Red one you got about a week ago, right?

The pickup shouldn't be wobbling - it should hold tight enough with the two adjustement screws that attach it to the pickguard and pretty much all non-reissue USA Teles are made that way with a humbucker sized neck pickup route. Check both the size of the hole for the pickup (it could be too large since that is an aftermarket pickguard) or your adjustment screws could be too loose.

Otherwise you could always put some foam under the pickup to keep it in place as that would also dampen any potential microphic issues.

Well here's the thing lol if I make the screws go all the way in it raises the pickup up way too high. So only the screw very tip of the thread are going into the pup. Also on top of that like you suggested I think the hole for the pup is too big it doesn't fit in it snug and that's apparent because it can fit a heavy gauge pick in between the pup and the holes rim. Also do you know if Fender has longer screws and something to place in there? I want it (minus the pups) as original as possible :)

I don't know if Fender has longer screws but at this point I would just go to the hardware store and get longer ones. As long as they look similar I don't think anyone down the line is going to worry about two screws that came from Ace hardware that are a couple of hundredths of an inch longer than the stock Fender screws.

Well just to be safe I ordered this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/310485914293?ss ... 1423.l2649

The other pick guard is slightly bowed slightly on the one side it isn't flush with the guitar in one spot and like I said I can tell isn't Fender brand. I was also thinking maybe the Fender Vintage noiseless pups weren't the same size as the stock ones that come in an American Standard. Do you happen to know?

You know I'm not sure about the Tele pickups as I've not seen them off the a guitar. I have seen the Strat pickups and yes they are a bit deeper than regular Strat pickups so I suppose that could be the issue - if the pickup mounting was further away from the top of the pickup then you would need longer screws.

I think it may be a combo if the pickup being lower and the neck pup hole being too large. Also the lacquer over the fret wire is peeling off ( I looked it up and apparently fender puts it over the fret wire too and on old maple necks it does start to peel on some) I'll get that taken care of when it gets a set up :)

I am sorry to hear of your troubles with your new 'pre-owned' chrome red Tele.. especially given your support to me and my Tele issues. It is a beautiful guitar...seems like it simply needs your loving care to make it your own...all will be well overtime. You know I'm not really one to advise given my self imposed Tele misfortune...you've had good suggestions and support from other lounge/forum members, I think you're right though in getting the new pickguard. Please let us know how things work out for you and... good luck!

Korarman thank you for the compliments on my posts and my Tele :) And it's fine it plays beautifully. Sadly the pickguard looks like it will arrive late due to this hurricane :L After a set up I'll have a good partner in crime for years to come :D I wanted to get another pickguard like I had but I went with a regular stock white one because it was a steal of a deal ($16.00 and some change I don't remember the exact amount lol) though the regular white is what came on it to begin with in 2004. I put in another post I like my guitars to look as new and clean an possible. I don't mind small dings or chips in the body but I can't stand rust, paint flaking or anything wrong with my necks. Though it's just a matter of opinion :)

Thank you!
My sentiments exactly in terms of appearance hence me picking at and messing up my pickup so it would be as clean and presentable as possible....road wear/playing/practice scars/dings and the like add some character but I don't like neglectful things myself however i've seen some really worn and battered Teles that were loved and still played beautifully...good thing we all have a place in this Tele lounge and are united, despite differences, by our love of Teles...gee, what did I have for breakfast?...anyways..more pics required when she has been all put together..

Yeah I wouldn't mind a really old beat up Tele that has been through the wringer but not one that was manufactured that way :( I got the pickguard in today and it fits liek a dream. I also got longer screws for the pickup so not only is it snug it's also wiggle free :) Now I just need a set up done on her and a new set of strings :D

Good for you! I'm happy to hear that things are resolving for you and Cherry Pie. I briefly considered getting a new road worn Tele but settled on the American Deluxe and I was not disappointed in her beautiful condition and looks. Any wear and dings that follow will be mine and that is fine and the older Teles that have been through the wringer are way out of my price league.
Perhaps by now your set-up is done and she's sporting new strings...time for a photo?
