I know someone with a decent selection of wood cutting equipment who is going to help me route out for a P90 in the neck. After considering how to make the most of this visit, I've always liked the idea of having a Tele double cut.

What kind of saw is involved in creating the additional cutaway? and how best to make sure no tear outs occur near the neck pocket?

lol maybe I shouldn't be doing this!

I'd like symmetrical, but am sure that could be tricky when approaching the neck pocket area. I wouldn't want a Strat looking thing in the end.

Fender did do one but it was a set neck semi hollow with an ugly pickguard

There was also a similar guitar without the f-holes, sleek Strat cutaways and headstock, the shortlived Stratosonic. It sported a solid Honduran mahogany body, a Tech-Tonic stop tailpiece and a pair of Black Doves.

This model was also offered with dual humbuckers.

Double cutaway = not a Telecaster.

i'd use the tools and offer to get the heel cut away and the neck bolt placed differently to allow better upper fret access. how about a belly contour or arm contour if you're looking for something different ?

i have a set neck JA90 (actually based on the double cutaway TC90 thinline above), and the set neck is shaped to allow better fret access, it really makes a difference.

I hear ya. I do love the telecaster body as is! However I currently have 3 Teles, a 72 Thinline reissue, Thinline Vintage Modified and a traditional parts caster.

With this tele project I'm aiming to do an all out mongrel that will be whatever I want. I love double cutaways.

I'll be using a beat up Joe Strummer mim body. Already has the bell cut and arm contour :)
