Hello,

I've just got a Modern Player Telecaster. It's a really nice guitar, and the craftsmanship is awesome! Especially surprising as it was made in China. It's in the 'honey burst' finish, and looks good enough to eat :D

But anyway, I'm going to put some new strings on it, and was just wondering what's the maximum gauge it will take, without me be unable to adjust the saddles enough for intonation purposes? You know how it is... Often the G and low E saddles won't go back far enough. At least that's been my experience on certain guitars.

I like to tune a whole step down, for singing purposes, and I play heavy-ish music. But I like a lot of string tension too.

I have a couple of sets of D'addario EXL 116s. The gauges are as follows; .011, .014, .018, .030, .042, .052.

Will my Tele handle these? I don't really want to put them on only to find I can't adjust the saddles enough. So was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice or information. It'd be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Steve.

Standard gauge are 0.09 to 0.42 , bigger than that you could need to adjust intonnation and neck truss rod.

Thanks for your response, but you seem to have misunderstood what I was asking.

I do understand that changing the gauge from the stock 9s will require adjustments.

Like when you put heavier/ thicker gauge strings on a guitar, the intonation generally becomes sharp. So you need to move the saddles back to compensate. The thing is, some saddles won't move for enough back to take really thick strings. So I wondered if other people had heavy string gauges on their teles, with good intonation aswell?

Cheers.

I could only imagine the tele would take .011-.052 guage strings just fine.

Yes but put saddles in right place (back ) for intonnation. Chance are nut slot are too small for this, gauge.

Be sure to have your neck with not too much bow = too short for "big" strings

That's what I was thinking too, the nut slots can handle .010 most of the time but I'm not sure about .011. You may have to file the slots out with nut files.

Thanks for the response guys. Much appreciated.

For the record, I ended up putting 10s on. Ernie ball regular slinkys, 10- 46, to be precise.

Setting up the intonation was fine. However, when it came to the low/ bottom E, I had to move the saddle right back as far as it would go, because it was a fair bit sharp initially. So I would say anything more than 42 gauge on the low E, and I'd have had problem with intonation.

But anyway. The guitar plays great, and sounds real sweet now. Love it :D

Cheers again.

Check neck bow too . To much bow =shorter scale = intonnation problem with saddles adjustment

I just change out the strings on my American Standard Tele from Ernie Ball #10's to Fender pure nickle 150M's (#11's). They sit in the nut just fine, the neck didn't move at all, and the intonation is dead on....like this guitar was originally set up for #11's.....

Yes this could happened if very lucky sometime .

Or you don't have the right tool to mesure it or know how ?

If you change string from 10 to 11 and take some mesument right now , neck have not the time to bow . Wait tomorrow and look at it ......

Good to know that TonyMig if you really know how. But the age have nothing to do here if you don't learn how.

I read so often on forums people, not ill will, do not know the right way to make adjustments or do not have the patience to wait.

And this is after several post when nothing works that perceives itself as the guy forgot or mistook a step.

Because Real Men use 11's! 8)

I am not a Real Man as I use 9's on all but 3-4 of my guitars - those have 10's.

I will readily admit that I am simply not man enough to play 11's.
