Just joined on here. Looks like a wonderful place!

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions/advice on how to acheive that Don Rich Bakersfield sound. My main Tele is an '05 American series with the standard factory setup. My amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe. I recently read in the net somewhere that Buck Owens used to have Fender make special amps for that sound. Also that there were amps made at one time with a switch setting for "Bakersfield Sound".

Short of that, does anyone know of other options...pickups?...anything?

Thanks

The "Bakersfield sound" is just a straight up clean country sound. In has more to do with your playing style than your equipment. Never heard of an amp with a Bakersfield setting.

Don Rich for one, favored Fender Showmans, Buck supposedly favored Fenders also. A tele (or maybe a strat) and a good clean sounding Fender amp is just about all you'll need for the so-called "Bakersfield" sound.

The Bakersfield sound now is took over by Dwight Yoakam (who is probably the biggest Buck Owens fan around). He has Pete Anderson on guitar. Pete plays through a Line 6 (or he did) and I must say it sounds good. It sounds more like a unique country twangy tone with some drive, no thanks to Fender on this one. This is weird because rumor is, Dwight use to be strict on *what* you could play in his band, it had to be a Fender through a Fender. At least this is what it was like when Eddie Shaver played for him. I guess Pete put his foot down, hehe.

Sorry for rambling on. This was a good topic.

when i met pete a few years back he was playing tom anderson guitars with sd antiquity pu'smin them, and a pair of old bassmans i think, i rmeber them being tweed and fender, he told me that he only used the line six pod as a back up in case his regular set up went doen.

For the buck owens don rich sound, i have gottenalong with my am standard tele and a twin reverb

AS these guys have stated, the guitar sound associated with the Bakersfield Sound is a Tele into a clean Fender amp.

There was nothing out-of-the-ordinary (aside from appearance) about Buck's Tele's, and while there is a guy running around who says Buck's guitars were hand-assembled by Leo himself, and his amps Leo-modified with a special "button" on the front panel labeled "Bakersfield sound," that's obviously a load of hooey.

It's more about HOW you play than WHAT you play. I've seen Vince Gill get all the Bakersfield you can stand out of a Strat with EMG's in it.

I agree that a lot of the tone is in your own hands :D
A Telecaster through a fat Fender tube amp and a decent compressor go a long way to get that sound.

Hey flamekaster!

I'm still sorting out my pedalboard. I use my old POD 2.0 along with the floor controller and I use the Blackface amp setting. A little overdrive, some compression, some delay & reverb - this sounds really sweet through my '65 Blackface Deluxe Reverb Re-issue. I just had my amp re-tubed with some JJ tubes and had the bias tweaked - nice difference!

The basic pedal set up I'll use for my Tele is my TS9, Dyna-Comp, DD-6 delay and a volume pedal. I've thought about trying a power attenuator to get some nice driven tone at a lower volume.

It's the never ending tone experiment :D

What are you running?

Thanks guys. This is what I suspected might be the case.

I got lost for over two & half decades and just started picking again about 3 years ago. I never played through much affects other than a delay. But I've heard of these compressor things and heard either Albert Lee or Ray Flacke mention 'em. What do you folks suggest for a guy who only jams with a few friends and has no further aspirations for stage work but likes to play with sound?

Also, what does a volume pedal do for you? (yeah, I was primitive as heck when I played in my youth)

Thanks for any of your ideas and opinions.

Tele ---> comp (LIGHT compression, not heavy chicken picking compression)---> delay with LIGHT slapback --->clean Fender Amp (Deluxe / Twin / etc)

More important than all that is truly UNDERSTANDING Don's playing. Learn the songs, practice the style, and the rest will follow.

sorry for the slow reply,

That is a nice litte set up, i mugh suggest ytryign putting you compressor right next to the guitar or right befor the volume pedal and see what works for you. I run mine these days as the first thing my guitar goes into, but i am running it as a lead boost as much as anything

Right now i stripped my board down, for convience so i am running guitar
into
vht valveulator
dano tuner
fulltone 70' fuzz
ts10 tube screamer
dunlop cry baby wah
ts 9 (fixing to be another ts 10 thanks first measure)
dan echo
eh holy grail reverb

amp

my normal big board goes more like this
guitar
vht valvulator
out b goes to dano tuner
out a goes to
boss cs 2
dano cool cat chorus
dunlop wah
bossbd2
voodoo labs proctavia
fulltone 70' fuzz
boss ds-1 (modded with the keeley ultra mod coming soon)
ts 10
dunlop wah
ts10
boss tr2 tremelo
dan echo
mutron phaser
digitech whammy
eh holy grail reverb

Ialso use a maestro fuzz pedal when it works

Next pedal purchases will be the
keeley katana
vox cooltron dual overdrive
analog man peppermint fuzz
eh q tron
some form of good flanger

Yes i love pedals lol

I like your pedal set up :) Pedals are just too much fun - and you can buy'em one at a time and the wife doesn't get alarmed!

I'll try your suggestion on the pedal layout - always fun to experiment.

Tried it yesterday - sounds great! Oh yeah...I bought a new American Standard Strat last night so I played until my fingers were sore :) It's the 3-color sunburst with rosewood fretboard. This thing is the lightest Strat I've ever owned - even lighter than my Tele.
