Hi all,

I have a simple question:

How much do you guys think I should pay for a USED 1963 Relic Custom Shop Telecaster (the 2009 model)? It is the Dakota Red one found on this page (first guitar in the list of Telecasters there): http://www.fendercustomshop.com/index.p ... ired-2009/

Thank you!
FG

Well... How bad do you want it..?? j/k...

Interesting question...

MSRP is $5,400.00 (no one pays that)- Street Price (Big Box Music Stores) is $4,325.00.

Figure used, and NOT yet a collectible, somewhere between 10%-25% off of the Street Price - between $3,250.00 - $3,890.00.

Like almost everything, these guitars will have a period of depreciation. Since this is still available new, your price should be less than that by the range I already mentioned.

These are new guitars and someone wanting to buy one next year won't pay a premium for yours, they'll just go and buy a new one. The first uptick in used pricing will be when they are no longer available new - there will be a finite number of them available.

But, the true answer may lie in your intentions.

If you're buying it as a player, and you really like it, a couple hundred bucks either way will pale with time over the years you'll own and play it.

OTOH, if you're buying it as a collector, or more aptly a speculator, your future gain will rest, to a large degree, on your purchase price, so go with the lowest number that will swing the deal.

As a collectible, I am a little skeptical of these 'Relics'. The 'Relic' craze now upon us may just be a phase. They may not hold their value over time - since 'Relics' are a new phenomenon, there really is nothing to base it on.

Personally, while a huge fan of a true Relic, these mass-produced (albeit Ltd. Ed. CS) 'Relics' are of no interest to me. I consider them posseurs.

Now, not everyone feels this way, but the market of those who appreciate, and are willing to pay more for them, is much smaller than the general Guitar Buying Market.

I realize that I'm not being much help, except to say that you can't truly pin this down to a number, it'll be more of a feeling.

If you're happy with the lowest price the seller will accept, than that's the definition of a Good Deal, if not, then simply don't buy it !

Good Luck !

cheers!

Well, I bow to your expertise in guitars !!

I Buy/Sell Classic Cars, it's a way for me to keep a small stable of them as a hobby and keep it Cost Neutral. In fact, I have consulted for numerous people in finding/negotiating cars for them. Even with my fee, they always end up with very good deals (or I tell them to Walk Away).

One of the things I try to gauge early on in the process is the Seller's motivation for selling. If they're just tired of it, the negotiation is more difficult than if they're selling in order to buy something else, or are in a ' Money Crunch '. If it's the latter two, I know I'm in the Driver's seat and I will press really hard.

But, these are for very special cars of VERY limited numbers.

I could be wrong, but I don't get the impression that this model Tele is Uber Rare, just a nice Factory upgraded model, which is still being produced.

I was basing my opinion on the only 2 used ones listed that I could find out there - of course, this was the range of their asking prices, not what they will ultimately sell them for.

Now that I think about it (and see your recommendation), 35%-50% seems like proper depreciation for a 6 y.o. guitar.

My advice to the OP is to try and learn why it's being sold and go from there. Be sure to try and stay Objective, allowing Emotion to creep in will not serve you well.

cheers!

Really..??

Seems like we didn't come up with the answer(s) you wanted to hear...

Still... you're the one shouting "HELP!!!"

As I said: "How bad do you want it..??"

You must have a budget... everyone has a budget... whether it's for guitars, Pez Dispensers or Baseball Cards...

Stay within your budget !!

Other than that, you're the negotiator... offer whatever price you're willing to pay.

The Seller will either agree or not.

If not, and your budget hasn't been exceeded, simply up your bid...

Good Luck !

cheers!

Dear Lightnin,

I thank you very much for your kind answers but the reason why I am asking other opinions is that the two only answers I got (you and another guy) give very different info.

You say between 3200$ and 3800$ and the other person say I shouldn't pay more than 2500$.

There is a difference of 700$-1300$ between your two answers...

So I want to get more opinions just to make sure the asked price is fair.
That's all.

One more thing Lightnin,

I am familiar with your excellent advice and your seller/buyer "science". All I want to know is how much the guitar is usually worth (in the blue book of guitars for instance).

Hi Frederick,

first off let me say that that is one beautiful tele you are looking at. I own a '63 Closet Classic and it is absolutely my favorite guitar of all time. The '63 Tele pickups are fantastic (in this opinion).

The Custom Shop has varying price points based on whether the guitar is team built, masterbuilt, type of finish, etc. The 'Relic' process seems to grant Fender the right to jack up certain guitars $1000 or more, seemingly based on how extensive the relic work actually was.

From my personal experience, all of these bells and whistles aren't going to make the guitar any better of a player beyond a certain price point. If one were asked to blindly play a $3K and a $4K guitar one after the other, and identify which was which, I'd say they'd have a pretty difficult time. My Closet Classic is fancy enough. If someone wants to shell out $2K more for a guitar built by just one guy, more power to them. But there won't be any drastic difference in playability, just difference in the characteristics of the instrument itself. And perhaps collectability.

That being said, I usually don't see used CS instruments on the 'bay for less than $1700. Granted the '63 Relic Tele might have cost more originally than other models. I would say a used price of around $~2200 for the guitar would be fair. $1900 Low, $2500 High. It really comes down to each of the sellers' and buyers' circumstances.. my Closet Classic was advertised locally for $1500. The seller could have listed it for $2000, and to the right person that price would have been fair.

There is a lot of flux with this sort of market. I agree with tbazzone's initial appraisal.
