I have been a huge John5 fan for a long time but his custom shops were always too expensive for me and his squires seem good, but I found one in the middle!

I was wondering if anyone knows about this guitar. My Guitar Center doesn't have one, so if I get it, I won't be able to try it out first.

I have never owned a real Fender, so I don't know everything about them. I also wouldn't mind alternatives recommendations, maybe an American Tele or Strat, which I think would be fine, but I was interested in the pickups on the J5, which seemed to have a great sound. I want a tele, but wouldn't mind a strat.

Mostly I do Hard Rock (50's-70's), and Metal(all), I do others but not as much.
I just use an Line 6 UX2 with Bx5a monitors, but I am looking at a line6 or fender modeling amp for my little studio.

The other ones I was looking at are

2012 American Standard Fender Strat HSS w/rosewood(the one with a diamondback humbuck on bridge, and two tex-mex singles)

Or the 2012 American Standard Strat Non-HSS, that has 3 Custom Shop Fat 50's pickups.

Or the 2012 American Fender Tele(with custom shop twisted tele on neck, and Broadcaster on bridge).

All those are $1100, and the J5 is $1200, which isn't a big difference, the biggest concern is whether a Signature Mexican Fender is "better" or worth the extra $100 than the American Standards.
The biggest turn on, is the fact, that I can play the American Fenders before I buy them, while the J5 I won't be able to.

To me, there is a HUGE difference between a Stratocaster and a Telecaster !

That's why I like having them both.

So I think 1st priority would be for you to decide which one works best for you.

Don't get too hung up on the pups and such, you can get virtually any combination of pups you want from places like:

AllParts - http://www.allparts.com
Guitar Parts Resource - http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/guitar_index.htm
Stewart-Macdonald - http://www.stewmac.com/

amongst others and add them later, often for much less than buying them as part of an off-the-shelf guitar.

All the guitars you mention are good. There are some excellent Mexicans out there, but there is much more variation between individual guitars than the American ones, so you really have to play them. I'd be much more reluctant to buy a Mexican sight unseen than an American.

I got my MIM Tele for free, so I didn't have much choice. But several bona fide experts have since played it and have said it's an excellent guitar, even better than some Americans (I thought the same thing, but am not nearly as knowledgeable as they are).

Anyway, Have Fun deciding !

Good Luck !

cheers !

I am thinking about either J5's the Squire or the Mexican. I have read a lot of good stuff about the Squire version, which is odd, cause usually people say the action/intonation/neck are horrible compared to fenders.

I know its below the range I was willing to go for, but I was thinking up a plan, like if I got the Squire J5 sent in, and decided it wasn't good enough, I could jump up, and get the Fender J5 sent over. I mean I will be sitting around waiting for a guiar, but at least I can try the guitars I really think I want.

i wouldnt even be thinking about those guitars as comparable. regardless of fender/squire, they are entirely different.

one is proper custom, with 3 humbuckers, big headstock, big scratchplate, strat bridge. very much like his actual guitar, last time i saw a picture of him playing. the other is just a normal tele with 2 humbuckers and a flashy pickguard. no link to him whatsoever other than his name.

if i was a fan of a particular artist, and i wanted his guitar, i wouldnt settle for some random parts bin guitar that somebody has decided to attatch his name to.

the squire is nothing more than a tool to enable all the little kiddies with marilyn manson t-shirts to pretend they are J5, oblivious to the fact its nothing like his actual guitar.

your call of course, but dont kid yourself that buying the squire is like having your heroes guitar.

Yeah I went today to do a swap, and I played almost every tele and strat. I AM into tele's first then strats. I mean I even played the nicer gibson studios in this price range and I wasn't feeling them. I almost left with the American Fender Standard Tele.

I understand what your saying, like I said I am an uber fan. So you mean, little kids wearing Rob Zombie t-shirts :) and us older guys wearing our Manson shirts.
Actually he is more popular because of his solo stuff, which is insane, check it out! HellBilly Deluxe 2 and God Told Me To, he does a killer Beat It Cover, that everyone loves.

Amazon said The Fender Triple Deluxe was first for sale in 2006, which is odd cause there are few pictures of him with it in his hands(I have seen several videos of him using the squier, and many pictures(including non-officall-advertisment of him just using it)).

However its kind of weird that he does a lot to sell the squier, but absolutely nothing for the Triple Deluxe.

I have read he was using it on tour, and in an interview he was talking about when he first used it live, and I have also seen pictures since, but no advertisment stuff like the squier.

He has an concept J5, which has the 70s head and dual humbuckers(he doesn't have that big head anymore). The squire is the same one as his main one. Its the same without the originals pickups, pickguard and bridge, but the neck, head, and body are the same

The triple deluxe is just an upgrade from his original one he uses. bigger chrome plate, extra pickup(non diamarzio's), 70s head instead of his big one, and same wiring config with knobs and switch.

Honestly I am thinking about just dropping the same cash on an American, and making my own sound. I mean I love his music and his guitars, but I could get better sound from an American Tele, which I could upgrade the pickups to.
