12 Years ago I was bought a Squier Telecaster for my 18th birthday. At the time I was a sponsored semi-pro drummer but I'd always fancied learning guitar.

I worked hard and tought myself the basics and although other guitars came and went, I have always found myself too attached to let my Tele go.
Anyway..... I fancied knowing a bit more about my guitar so I looked it up online.

Its a Squier Telecaster, made in Japan with a J# prefix on the serial (1990 ish?) It has a 6 straddle bridge that is top loading for the strings (not strung through the body,) and is red (maybe dakota) with a maple neck and fretboard and a black single ply pick guard.

Now for the bit i need help on. Im not sure if it is genuine as underneath the pickguard is completely hollowed out, but this has been done from the factory and the neck pickup sits on top of a block in this large hollowed cavity. I have never seen a fender or a squier have this large hollowed cavity under the pickguard and can't help but think its possibly a fake!

Please can anyone shed any light on this!

Did you buy it new 12 years ago..??

While not really familiar with Squires, I do know that MIM and AM Teles can have the 'hollowed out' bodies to accomodate different and multiple pups.

I have also seen the early Teles where the neck pup is attached to a block - I believe these are the 5-hole PG models. On the 8-hole models, the pups ride on the PG.

Hope this helps...

cheers!

No I didn't buy it new, it came 2nd hand from a music exchange store, thats what got my a bit concerned. It is a 5 screw pickguard but as I said, I've never seen on with the entire cavity routed out!

I'm no expert, but could you be talking about swimming pool routing?
