Hello:

I'd like to flush out the true identity of the non-Custom Shop “Texas Special” pickups that are being used in the FSR Ash Telecaster with Texas Special Pickups (Cherryburst) and the American Special Telecaster.

It seems that owners are getting ohms readings that are all over the place with these pickups.

Can anyone provide any information on the non-Custom Shop “Texas Special” pickups, such as magnet type (alnico III, alnico V or ceramic), resistance range specifications (in ohms) for the neck and bridge pickups, and whether or not Fender is making multiple versions/variations of these “Texas Special” pickups?

Thanks for any insights.

What makes you think that there is such a thing as a "non-Custom Shop Texas Special" pickup?

What does "ohms readings that are all over the place" mean? Please provide examples.

To my knowledge, the Texas Special pickups are from the Custom Shop. It has been my understanding that if you buy them as accessory pickups, they have the Custom Shop sticker on them but if they are installed in a guitar like an American Special, they do not have the Custom Shop sticker.

indeed, I've compared an American Special strat and the SRV strat... the pups are the same.

CS Texas Specials have staggered pole pieces in the bridge position, with white fiber wrapping on the magnet wire, and increased output in both the neck and bridge positions, usually in the 10K+ range.

The Texas Special p'ups in the American Special Telecaster and the FSR Ash Telecaster with Texas Special Pickups (Aged Cherryburst) DO NOT have staggered pole pieces, have black fiber wrapping on the magnet wire, and in my case, output in both neck and bridge positions measuring in the 5-7K range, which is not considered "increased output", IMHO.

There is something very different about these pickups, yet Fender refers to both sets as "Texas Specials".

There's something in the air, and it would be very reasonable to expect Fender to come forward and clear that air by providing an explanation - and some facts as to how these pickups are different!

By "compared", what do you mean? They sound the same, they look the same, or they have the same measured output?

You'd better look again, young fella...

Eh. Guess I don't care enough to get worked up about it.

Eh. Guess I care enough that I want to know the difference (since I have a set in my FSR Tele).

With compare I mean I have both guitars, the pups sounds identical... tested it with A/B-ing soundsamples ... same pickup height. Did not measure the output... no need to :)

By the way : in my american special strat, the pole pieces ARE staggered just like in my SRV strat ;)
