I totally disagree. Further, and not to start a pissing contest, if one still must rely on measuring devices for basic setups, then one hasn't mastered the task yet.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Mesuring is the key of easy and better set up . I try this method before buying some basic mesuring tool. I will never go back now.

Now I'm lost. :?

+1 . Though I've been criticized for that on this forum earlier :?

Just ignore them. No professional luthier or guitar tech that does setups for a living is going to wait 12 hours between adjustments. And if its still not right after the first 12 hours, do you adjust it again and wait another 12 hours? You'd never get a guitar set up doing that and you would quickly go out of business. Does anybody really think that Rene Martinez waited 12 hours after adjusting Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar neck to complete a setup?

"No professional luthier.... " :Are you sure really sure ? That's why only few luthier are know to be very good , they take the time to.

" Rene Martinez...."

Top guitar player have their own luthier , he know very well the guitars used . And doing tune up very often ( on same guitars ) that help to do the job quickly and well done
That is not the case of most of guitar player , here on the forum . Most of guitar player did not see often the luthier for tune-up . They wait many years between tune up and this result is it not easy to have a fast and good tune -up / truss rod adjustment.

I don't say all guitar take 12 hours to be ok , but some need to . Yes this mean the first time you have a guitar you could have to wait 12 hours to see if it is ok .

I never see a luthier doing truss rod adjust when customer is waiting at the office. They keep the guitar few days.

More chance to get out of bussiness if job is not finish = customer not happy.

I have a chance to repair guitar and amps as an hobby, I could take time , look and see. And most important , I don't wait for money.

Stratele52,

The only time I had to let an instrument sit after adjusting the neck was a bass where the truss rod had been tightened all the way such that the neck was bowed up in the middle. Even with the bridge adjusted all the way up, the strings rested on the neck. The bass had been stored in an uninsulated garage in 30 degree F weather. After letting the bass slowly come up to room temperature, I loosened the truss rod all the way, installed new strings and tuned them to spec and let it sit for several days. After that I was able to adjust the truss rod properly. Subsequent adjustments take only minutes. In my opinion, that is an extreme case. The bass was completely unplayable when it came to me.

For normal guitar maintenance, I don't agree with your rationale, but I am not going to argue with you. If you are happy adjusting a neck as you describe, fine. That works for you. They way I do it (which is the same way the luthier I work for part time does it) works for me. I'll leave it up to the OP and others to decide how they want to do it.

FYI - I posted earlier how I liked the setup on my new Tele Select which is just a few months old. I hadn't played it for a couple weeks and took it out of the case last night. The strings were buzzin' and the tuning was 2 steps too high. So a few months ago when I bought it, it had .015" bow. I had the tech lower it to .008" and it stayed there for a few months. It just took a slightly cooler trend here in the past couple weeks. When I checked the neck there was no gap. A quick 1/4" turn of the truss rod and everything was back.

Good thing you do Dave.

Most people don't know that if strings begin to buzz (after be alwright ) it is ONLY a truss rod adjustment.
Bridge/ saddles can't move down by themselves.

It is an adjusment that every guitar player must be able to do . Guitar need that few time a years. It is faster to learn and do than going to see a luthier. And save money too.

So you never had a Jaguar, huh..?
Actually, there are bridges that let the screws slip, and thus the string height alters. Haven't seen one in a Tele yet, but I consider anything is possible...

I agree with jmattis.

Of note: Jaguars weren't introduced until 1962.

It would be better to say, "From the 1960s" (or '60s).
