I have a new 2012 American Standard Tele. Had trouble keeping it in tune out of the box. So I Had the tech at GC set it up. Checked relief, intonation and such. Still seem to be fighting with it to keep it in tune.

Any ideas? Strings are factory original. Assembled in May.

And a general tuning question: using an electronic tuner, should a string that registers as in tune in the open position also register as in tune when you ring the harmonic at the 12th fret? Mine register differently so that the open string "in tune" is different than the harmonic "in tune."

Thanks for any insight. Frustrating.

Hi B Scribe...
Yes it should. Sounds like your intonation is off, despite the setup. A new guitar will 'settle in' for a period of time which will affect the intonation, among other things, but I've not experienced a situation where it is impossible to keep the guitar in tune....though this may be more due to the fact that I tend to buy used instruments :)
Anyway, here's a link to the Tele setup guide in case you don't already have it. http://www.fender.com/en-CA/support/art ... etup-guide
Also, there are many on this forum who are much more knowledgeable than I as to tuning / intonation issues and with luck, they'll offer further advice.
cheers,
Alex

Sure your guitar need a set up , go to see a real luthier , This guy at GC don't know how to IMO.

It is so easy to do set up on Fender guitars

How is the "fretted" note at the 12th fret. I never set my bridge up to the harmonic.

Go to the Fender guide to get started as suggested. Or seek a quality luthier.

Thanks for the replies. I'm working on learning how to set up myself. Goal one on the intonation is getting the open string to be in tune with its fretted 12th. So the harmonic doesn't really play into it?

Don't worry about the harmonic, just use the fretted note at the 12th fret to intonate!
If fretted note reads sharp, move the saddle away from the neck (turn screw clockwise)
If it reads flat, move saddle towards neck (turn screw anticlockwise)

Should actually be impossible for the 12th fret harmonic to be out of tune with the open string - it's completely unaffected by any intonation issues and will always be exactly (well, as near as dammit) one octave above the respective open string.

If it is somehow out of tune with the open string, I think your problem may be with a local disruption of the laws of physics. Or a dodgy tuner, which most certainly do exist.

just my 2 cents,,

it's best to intonate with new strings, vs old strings.

It sounds like the pickups are too close to the strings.
