Hi Guys

Just a few observations about my USA Deluxe Telecaster.

I've had it since February with a replacement from Fender due to QC issues of the original one I bought (Superb customer service)!

Its a strange situation I find myself in, I've read lots about the stacked coil system loosing that twang from normal single coils. I agree with this although I don't think it's far away, its just different. I sometimes think that its because they are so quiet! Sometimes it freaks me out. I think though that this view has slowly started eating away at me.

The neck and quality of the guitar though makes me smile whenever I pick it up. I love it and could happily play it all day if I didn't have a job and young family! I really wanted a professional quality MIA fender for a life long guitar so I went for the deluxe. The custom shop was out of my league.

With the release of the new American vintage series guitars I feel like I probably would have gone for one of those but if I chop mine in I'll loose a lot of money from it so that puts me off.

I also have a 1995 MIM guitar with 57/62 pickups installed so I have the single coils if required.

I don't know what the point is to my post but I thought I would share my thoughts. I love it but feel like I may have made a mistake.

There is always a new or better model and maybe I am just suffering with that... Or GAS :D

Am I just being silly??

Tom

Sounds like Gas to me. I live with it. Try changing out the p/u,s if you need to but they are very nice guitars and I don,t think you will get much better unless you go C/S.

I think you may be right about the GAS...I don't think my wife would let me bring home another guitar...at least for a while.

I really want to keep this guitar original. You've made me feel better already!

Hi Tom

GAS -- no cure, just appease the syndrome is the best you can hope for!

I've been where you are brother.. Got a 96 strat plus that I bought new that same year, nothing remarkable about the guitar itself other than for me, it is the best playing/feeling strat I've ever had.

It took me about 6 months to realize the only thing I didn't like was the lace sensors. In fact, I hated them - sterile sounding, no bite, just - blah....

I replaced them with a set of Texas Specials. It was a huge improvement and they've been in there ever since.

I know part of the equation is you want to keep it all stock, but honestly, if the tone aint cutting it for you, that's such an easy change out. Just keep EVERYTHING you take out, so if the mood shifts the other way, you can always restore it to stock.

Good luck!

Cheers, your probably right. I wont rush anything I'll play away on it and give it a some real time to decide whether I like them or not. Some days I love them and others I don't. I'd say its more positive than negative. I think they are just not as unruly which will help in some situations including my playing but I do miss a good bit of hum and twang!!

I did enjoy changing the pickups in my strat and I love the sound of them now so its definitely an option!

I appreciate the comments.

Damn you GAS!!! :D

If it's gnawing at ya dump it and move on. I've never kept a guitar that I didn't absolutely love.

GAS - there really is no cure.

I'm still liking my Fender Select Tele, and I've only had it since June, but that still doesn't stop me from lusting after some of the new AV guitars.

I feel you have to play them all, and sometimes you'll find the grass really isn't greener on the other side of the fence. In my case I learned on a Fender with that vintage style neck (round radius and small frets); part of me always wants to go back to that feel - I guess it's just muscle memory from those first 5-6 years of learning to play. However, if you haven't really spent time with a vintage-style Fender that neck can feel pretty alien.

I,ve had a hard time bonding with my 52 Hotrod. One day I decided to tune it to open E and play slide on it and I love it. Don,t give up on it.

Did the same. I wouldn't keep a guitar stock just for the sake of it. One evolves, and so does the guitar.

Cheers

You say that it makes you smile and you love it. That sounds like a good marriage to me. I think you should keep it.

Thanks for the reply guys I really appreciate it.

I'll probably keep it and think about changing the pickups if I have to. I've not had it long enough to know for sure plus I'm not in a band at the moment - That's something I really need to sort out.

Or just buy another fender but the Epiphone casino will have to go before that happens.

It could end in divorce though!!!!

So much gear and so little money in my bank account :D

Damn you GAS!

Tom

Those select teles look superb and I bet they play great - you lucky devil 8)

The american vintage have been calling my name...But like you say the grass is not always greener and the lack of the real single coil sound allows me to have quiet nice modern sounding pickups with a telecaster sound. I think I'm just being silly about it - the cherry burst does look pretty!!

I just want work to finish now so I can play the hell out of it! But I'll more likely have to change my daughters nappy instead - long gone are the days of no responsibilities, but I wouldn't change it for the world!

Thanks again and enjoy that Tele!

Tom

Bassetts - thanks! I hit one of those "milestone" birthdays this year and that was basically my present to myself. Not having one around here to try out I was actually demoing a few American Deluxe Teles as they have kind of the same feel (back bevel and compound radius neck) then after getting the green light from my very understanding wife I took a flier on having the Select shipped in from a dealer I used to frequent when I lived in Kentucky. They had a few of them in stock and I trusted them to pick out one I would like (based on the other guitars I've bought from them over the years) and they hit a home run for me. It's not a traditional Tele sound with that chambered body, but it's got a lot of cool, usable tones.

That being said I still wouldn't mind a rosewood board guitar and want to try out that new AV '64 Tele (and the rosewood board '59 Strat plus the '65 Strat).

I believe I no longer GAS for Teles! I always look at the new models and CS Teles thinking I need one. They are so tempting. I have a 52 Reissue and it is sweet and so is my FSR American Ash in seinna sunburst. I also have a natural Koren Lite Ash model with SCN's and an S-1 switch and bigsby and my all black partscaster with 3 Jason Lollar pups and a 5 way. My two main amps are a Blues DeVille 410 and Vox AC 15. For smaller venues I use a Lunchbox Amp which is pretty decent. I believe I have the tone spectrum covered! When I look at Teles, I just keep asking myself, how will this sound any different or better than what I have? I know, all guitar have their own tone, but I believe I have all I need for any musical situation. Now that Gretsch or Ric, thats a different story!

It certainly does look like you have the teles covered. I love my tele now, i did a bit of jamming with my brother recently and we got some great tones going and the noiseless pups really helped when we recorded some of it.

My guitar collection is terrible compared to yours which might explain the gas!

I can't wait to hear my tele through my new princeton reissue which is waiting for me at home.

Tom
