I've been a big fan of the Tele for over 20 years, but there's one thing that I've never understood: Why does Fender still use the same old cup jack plate for tele?

These things are always coming loose.

Allparts sells an Elctrosocket type and I've never had an issue with it. Here's the link for what I'm talking about.

If Fender is forever moving forward to make a better guitar, than why not change out what doesn't work always work well with something that never fails?

Anyone have any thoguhts on this.

This has always been an item that I've found a pain. I have repaired a couple of my cheap Teles by simply removing the standard cup, drilling and countersinking the holes and using small screws to secure. This works the same way the one you mention does.
Having said that, I think the A/P Electrosocket is a much better fix. My most recent Tele, a Blacktop model uses a square plate and four screws to secure the jack.
Guess they finally smelled the coffee. :P

The one on my AVRI 52 Telecaster has stayed nice and tight.

The initial design, which was the milled cup, was a much better system, but I guess it cost more and had to be ditched in favour of the pressed cup!

Repro milled cups are available from people like Rutters or Glendale!

I've owned four or five Teles and I've always had trouble with the damned thing. I think it has to do with the little clip behind the cup.

In no particular order:

1. Fender doesn't have to. Anyone interested in purchasing a Tele will not pass the guitar over due to the (traditional) jack cup. Ergo, production costs remains stable.

2. The ElectroSocket suits have absolutely no reason to give Fender a "pennies on the dollar" deal for this product as they stand to make a hell of a lot more money selling it as an after-market unit.

3. Some people have absolutely no problem with the current jack set up.

4. It bucks 'tradition'.

5. A goodly segment of the Tele owning population wouldn't know the difference any way.

As always, the above is merely IMO where YMMV.

I have alway swapped out my jacks for a flush mount jack with the 4 screws. I haven't done that on two of them, my 52 re-issue and the new Sienna Ash. If they do cause me any problems, I would not hesitate to swap either out for the flush mounts.
