Does anyone know or where to find out what tuners were stock on the Tele Plus, no tremolo (1991). I am looking to upgrade and don't want to put the same thing back on because I don't what I've got now. Also thinking strongly about a nut replacement. I believe that over the years the strings have worn into the nut and have begun to bind in the slots. I have cleaned and lubed the slots. My local guitar serviceman mentioned that even he was having trouble getting my guitar to tune. He said he'd done everything to the neck and saddle adjustments that he could and they were fine. He said the next thing to consider was different tuners. I love the string setup and the was it plays but I, too, have noticed it has become increasingly difficult to get the get the guitar in tune. I have noticed that once the open string is in tune that the 1st thru 4th fretted notes are all sharp. Mostly on the D, B, & high E. Nut issues? Any recomendations on nut and tuners would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, the tele plus came stock with the same Fender/Schaller die cast tuners as the American Standard. In which case, I would suggest checkin out some prices on Schaller or Sperzel locking tuners if you want something that will basically drop in with no modifications. I'm not sure of who your local tech is or how knowledgeable he is, but these tuners really should be pretty solid for quite a long time. On way to adjust them is to tighten the screw that holds the button on. This actually prevents slippage and may be all you need to try. Step two is to find a graph tech nut from all parts. Any guitar shop should be able to order this for you and again, there shouldn't be any need to mod the guitar itself. If you don't like the idea of having a black nut (graph techs are made of graphite and therefore black), then you can opt for the tusq line from all parts. These are a composite that also aids in the elimination of string slippage but is made to look more like and act more like natural bone. Personally, I would probably just pick up a replacement set of the same tuners and a replacement nut from fender. But I guess I just like to keep the things that I like, the same.

I would have the nut changed out first, see if that fixes the problem.
