I went to Guitar Center and tried out some guitars. First was an orange Gretch semi-hollowbody. Second was a Squier Surf Strat. Third was a Modern Player Jaguar. Fourth was an American Standard Tele. The Gretch was a fun guitar and it was easy to get feedback from it. The Surf Strat's quality surprised me. At $300, it's a good deal. The Jaguar was HEAVY! The neck pickup sounded great with the tone rolled off. The Tele was extremely nice and played great, but I didn't like the contour. I like my Teles to be planks. While I was playing, some jagoff came in and started playing blues badly at a very high volume. I couldn't even hear myself play, so I left.

I'm the same. I can't stand any kind of contour on a tele.

Otherwise, it was a really nice Tele. It played about like my Teles play. It played like a Tele is supposed to, and it did it well. I just like my planks. I have no problem with contours of Strats (I own 4 of them) or Jazzmasters or Jaguars, but a Tele should be bulky and rugged. It's like putting an automatic transmission on a Porsche Boxter.

I can't get over how heavy the MP Jaguar was. It was made of Mahogany. It probably weighed nearly what 2 normal guitars would weigh. Awesome sounding P90s. I love the neck pickup sound with the tone rolled off for playing leads and solos, and this pickup sounded terrific in its role. I didn't like this guitar at first, then I got to looking at it and thinking it was actually kind of neat. Then I played it and I wouldn't mind having one (I'd have to buy it after I bought a "real" Jaguar with all the wheels and knobs and switches.) But that guitar sold me on P90s. If I were in the market for a guitar, I would consider the MP Jaguar. It's bone-dumb simple, and it sounds and plays great. It is probably too heavy to play more than a couple of songs with it but it would be a GREAT studio guitar.

So guitar Player reviewed the surf strat last month.. Got high marks all around. The writer mentioned the lipstick pickups were among the best he's ever heard.

I love the look too, surf green, white MOP PG.. Sort had a moment there where I felt "well Gosh, I must have one..." Then I remembered oh yea,, there's the 16 guitars in my guitar closet... ...sigh....

and yea, I'm with youz guyz too on a tele,, it's GOTTA be "plankish"

I've got a mid 90's ash body, natural finish, maple neck.. that was the keeper, I went through like three of them before this one came to stay. For such a simple design, there's just something about finding "the one"... Such an odd thing with a Telecaster.

Simple, to the point, and gotta have at least 1!!!

Yep, gotta have at least one. And a few more to keep it company!

Okay, okay, I'll admit it - the FSR in trans-red mahogany does have some sculpting...

I played a few guitars today myself - all in the comfort of the Music Room.
