I have a new American Std Telecaster and have yet to get the action that I want. I first removed the 9's and installed 10's strings. When checking action at the 17th fret, do you fret the string at the first fret, or not? I had to loosen the truss rod by a half turn to eliminate string buzz and rattle but now the action is a little too high. How can I adjust it and maintain the correct 9.5 neck radius. :(

Yes hold down the string at the first fret.

Going from 9s to 10s you might need to tighten the truss rod, not loosen it.

Set the height by adjusting the bridge saddles. Use the trussrod to adjust the relief. They're not the same thing. You might have to go back and forth between them a bit to get it right for your technique.

Check you intonation also. Which might lead to some more fiddling with saddle height.

Checking the neck relief is usually that process you mention. 1st fret, 17th fret, tap the strings somewhere in around the 9th or 10th fret to see how much relief you can feel, I usually just sight the neck to make sure I can detect a slight bow. But I also know what works for me and I like a pretty straight neck, so little to no relief.

is the action feeling kindof "spongy" in the middle?

If yes, maybe tighten a 1/4 turn on the truss rod? (small increments here usually make enough of a difference)

To set action, what I will usually do is measure the top of the fret to the bottom of the string with my finger on the first fret as you mention, (Measuring is not all that relavant but this just gives me an idea of where the action is before I make any changes). I can tell you what I shoot for, this may not work for your hands, but it's somewhere around 3~4/64s on the base side, 2~3/64s on the treble side. I use .10s and I have a pretty light touch.

the radius of the neck is going to be more a factor as you regulate the saddle height, as you'll want each string to be in the right ball park based on the neck radius, (aka curve of the fret board) it's not so much a factor in neck relief or relative action setting.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick responses. I guess I'll start with a near straight neck with slight relief, if any, and then work the bridge. I have the plastic Stewmac 9.5 profile tool to keep the profile correct.

cool, so when you tighten that truss rod, the minute you notice notes on the first few frets buzzing, go back like 1/4 turn on the truss rod, then smaller increments till those first 2 or 3 frets ring clean.

Setting the neck relief back to where it was is fine.

But get the string height adjusted with the bridge first before making fine adjustments to the relief.

Bridge sets the height. Trussrod sets the relief. They're interactive but that's the basic idea.
