Does this nitro type finish on these Select Series guitars ever get better. Reading around it seems it does but so far I hate it. It's very sticky to the point of annoying. Neck and body. Whether Nitro does make it sound better or not, it isn't going to last from what I can tell.

It also very prone to swirls. I almost returned the guitar because of the swirls but every nitro guitar there was the same way. Dealer called Fender about it and they said they are all like it, and it comes from the final buffer they use.

I have one; as you say the finish swirls are just part of the kind of nitro lacquer that Fender uses. I've also had that happen on Gibsons I've owned that also have a nitro finish (but I don't see it on my Collings which also has a nitro finish).

Now regarding the neck, the back of my neck was never sticky but the fingerboard was. The fingerboard seems to be getting less sticky now that I've had it a few months.

I've had my tele select for about a month. The swirls are not that noticable and I have no sticky areas and I'm playing it a lot.

Hello,
From the same problem on Gibson guitar neck. I have found the there is a lot of conflicting information on it. From sanding, putting olive oil on your hands to don't worry.
My tech used naptha and cleaned all the residue my hands that accumulated on the neck. I left the guitar out of the case for several months. Cleaning my hands before playing and constantly wiping the neck of with soft cotton cloth. I also occasionally applied Gibson Pump Polish that has a bit of lacquer in it. After 3 or 4 months I can say the the stickiness is gone. Oh, don't know about Fender but leaving your guitar on a stand with foam or surgical rubber is mentioned as a finish killer and not warrantied by other guitar manufacturers. I put cotton cloth to cover the contact area. Letting it air and keeping from adding hand oils and dirt appeared to have helped in my case. Good luck.

Nitro takes a really long time to cure (some say it never really does). My buddy's '52 AVRI had sort of a gummy feel when he first got it. So did my Gibson LP Jr. It starts to go away within a few months. Just be patient and don't start sanding your guitar or anything drastic.
