Here's a video of my brother playing my Tele. Some guy on the Tele forum said that Teles could not be played in the shred style. He was quickly proven wrong. I can't shred myself, but a good shredder can shred on a Tele or a Jazzmaster or a Jaguar or a Strat.

Didn't Terry Kath (Chicago) play a Tele (with tons of decals) prior to switching to a Strat?

Even James Hetfield uses a Tele: butterscotch blonde AVRI52 with B-Bender!

His tone is fine. You're perpetrating the stereotype that Teles are only for playing country or blues. Not everyone just plugs straight into an amp.

I was going to write something concerning this topic, but I think everyone has covered it.

I love my home built Andy Summers inspired Tele and use it for all sorts of things that have little to do with county music.

I was referring to the amount of reverb and delay dumped all over the place such that it makes whatever he's playing sound like mush.

What are you on about? The delay is only set to about 15, and the reverb to about 10. I don't know what kind of music you like and play, but I'm primarily a hard rock and metal guitarist, and the tone works just fine for what I play.

Musically, I didn't grow up on heavy metal, but in the past few years I've come to appreciate it as a great style of music. Having said all of that, I like classic metal from the '70s & '80s better than modern metal. A lot of this comes from the fact that I'm not really into the hard, crunchy, distortion saturated sounds of modern metal guitar tone.

When I go to GC and hear a lot of younger metal players they have a lot of right hand technique, but there's no control of their notes. Any thoughts on this?

I can entirely see where you're coming from, because I love that old metal. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, etc. Those are some of my favorite bands. I love a great distortion though, namely the brand that emerged from the 90's, which was a great decade for rock and metal. The 2000's has also spawned a lot of great rock and metal bands. A lot of it nowadays tends to be quite generic, but there are some diamonds in the rough. I guess for me I'm biased as I absolutely love distortion and shredding. And before you think I'm just on a metal high horse, I also absolutely love turning to a clean channel and playing some blues, or reaching for an acoustic.
As for the metal players at GC, I understand exactly what you're saying. I was in GC just last week and there was a probably 17 year old in there that obviously worshipped at the feet of All That Remains. Great band, but I think he could learn more before drowning everyone else out trying to play in the store.

+1, the mistakes are masked by all that mush.

Lose the effects, crank a tube amp.

Why? I enjoy my rig and my effects, why should I lose my tone just because someone else doesn't approve? If I told you I didn't like the way you sound, would you change it? Nope. You'd laugh it off because My opinion matters zero to anyone who truly enjoys the style they play, and those who don't like it's opinion matters just about as much as a gospel player criticizing my playing. I'm a metal player primarily and I enjoy my tone. I'm willing to bet you enjoy yours and the style of music you play with the same passion as I.
While I respect the input, and thank you for watching it, I shouldn't have to go tube or go completely clean just to gain the approval of someone else who's not even into my style. Sorry if I offended anyone here, but I love what I play and that's about it.

If you start playing through a highly digitalized sound using reverb, delay, fuzz/distortion, compression, flanger, phaser, pitch shifter, and chorus, then I'll start playing exclusively through a tube amp. Deal? I didn't think so.

Lol. No worries. I get people that love the way I play and some who can't stand it. If its the latter, it's fine. I play to please myself first and others later. I've gotten done compliments and some detractors. Metal isnt everyones style, and that's completely cool with me.
