if you go to guitarcenter.com they have this guitar school thing...it's only $20 a month. It depends where you are (with your playing) to determing whether or not it's a good value. If you have been playing for a 10+ years, the lessons don't really teach you much, however if you are looking to learn some cool licks, and rhythym's it could be worthwhile. It all depends. If you are trying to learn rock it has a lot of lessons. If you are into the blues/country it does not have that much.

Hope this helps.

check out metalmethod.com Its not just for metal (I like rockabilly, rock, and country, metal not so much) This will teach you how to do things efficiently.

buy the basic course which is a 6 DVD set. It is the best 70 bucks you will ever spend. My wife got this for me for christmas. And It has really helped my playing. 6 months ago I had never touched a guitar. Now I am playing out at open mic night. Seriously.

PS. I am not affiliated with it, just a happy customer. If I am breakin some rule, please feel free to delete it.

If you do get it, make sure you join the forum, so we can stay in touch and I can see your progress. Cheers.

Kennichiwa(i know its spelled wrong)

I ,too, am a noob at guitar and mean no disrespect when calling you a noob... just that you haven't played for long...

Well, I searched 'How to play the guitar' on Google and came up with a ton of sites, and I only looked at a few. They seem ok but like I said, I am a total idiot but I'm just trying to help:

www.playguitarforfree.com
www.wikihow.com/Play-Guitar
www.ultimate-guitar.com
(For Tab music and how to read it. Almost every song ever written is probably on this site...)
www.guitartips.com

I hope I have helped in some way. TTFN

The problem with youtube is that if you are a beginner, you don't know what is right and what is wrong. For example someone will show you to fret 5, 7 and 10 on the E string, when you could more efficiently use E5, E7, A5, whereas instead of going to fret 10 on the E, you go to A5. These are things you may not learn from youtube. So if you are learning the wrong way you will not know it, and will wonder why guitar is so hard, when in actuality, the more efficiently you play, the easier it becomes. Also, if you learn the wrong way it makes it that much harder to un-learn it. There are alot of great teaching methods out there. Find one that works for you. Remember with youtube its monkey see monkey do. and the monkey ain't necessarily doing it right.

i'm in the same boat (just got my first tele after playing basic stuff, mostly acoustic chords with no lead playing, for a few years) and i just came across guitartricks.com it seems pretty solid, offers 24 free lessons and then it's $15/month for unlimited lessons - and they have thousands of lessons in all different styles. i'm just starting to try it out, so i don't know much more than all that.

I just can't figure out how you can comfortably be near a computer while trying to handle your guitar. Even with a wireless laptop, it seems like a pain.

I think you're better off with a book/audio CD combo.

also found a site that i spent an hour on last night - nextlevelguitar.com there are plenty of free videos and you can upgrade to pay service if you want, but i really liked what i saw on my first visit.

***update***
