I am thinking of SDun. SM-1 mini-humbucker neck upgrade to my 08' MIM TELE. Has anyone had sucess with this without a pot change in a MIM Tele? ....or with any other mini-humbucker brand. Also looking at the guitar fetish mini-s as well.

I'm considering a Gretsch G5265 guitar that has two mini humbuckers.

Model Name: G5265 Jet™ Baritone
Series: Electromatic Collection
Body Shape: Jet™
Pickup Configuration: H/H
Bridge Pickup: Gretsch® Mini Humbucking Bridge Pickup
Neck Pickup: Gretsch® Mini Humbucking Neck Pickup
Pickup Switching: 3-Position Toggle:
Controls: Master Volume, Master Tone

Maybe you can learn something from this guitar. Toppscore :)

I just put a Gibson mini-humbucker on my Nashville Tele and I like it.
The combination of the mini with the middle pickup of the Nashville is very nice and distinctive also.
I did not change any pots because the Gibson mini is not very hot and its DC resistance is similar to the TexMex pickups on the Tele.

Don't you think it is more about changing the cabacitors than the pot?

I agree with denitronik's reasoning for not bothering to change the pot(s). As to the "cabacitors" (sp), first off, his Tele only has one capacitor. Secondly, all a capacitor does in conjunction with a pot is to bleed off high frequencies. How much it bleeds off is directly related to its value. With the tone pot on '10', there will be no discernible difference among the usual range of capacitors (one to the other) typically installed in guitars. Consequently and in this context, the answer is a big no.

I have great things to say about Guitar Fetish.
They area a small company and will answer all your questions
as to your set-up and comparisons to competitors' products.

I purchased a stacked 12k humbucker that's single coil sized
to compete in an HSH setup against two DeMarzion humbuckers
(Super Distortion III and the Humbucker from Hell).
That worked, and GFS had a lot of options.

Then, I Flippped a Left-Handed Standard American Strat for a Jimi Hendrix clone.
Guitar Fetish offers a set of reverse wound Hendrix SSS pickups.

Great product & great prices & great services.

BTW, if not mistaken, I have seen 250k 500k and 1mg pots, right?
does the capacitor's resistance vary with different pots?
Or, each pot "is what it is" and one can add different
valued caps to affect a particular pot's output?

1 meg, short for 1 megohm = 1,000K. So yes, you are right.

'Non technical' explanation: A capacitor stores up selected frequencies based on it's farad value and passes these frequencies along, depending on how the capacitor is wired into the rest of the circuit. In the case of tone pots in a guitar, the capacitor bleeds off these frequencies to ground as you dial the (tone) pot down. Therefore, a capacitor has no resistance, per se. Rather, it is the pot which regulates the frequencies the cap shall bleed off; again, depending on the cap's farad value. The resistance of the pot determines the "subtleness" of the bleed out. By this I mean, a lower resistance pot will bleed off more highs more noticeably with less tapering down (lowering the pot from '10' to '0') than a higher value pot would. Granted, the resistance of the pots alone affect the inherent tonality of the pickups but once again, the farad value of the cap is what traps whatever frequencies to be bled off via the tone pot.

I just put that exact pick up in the neck of my 08 MIM Tele. I went a little farther and also put a Little '59 in the bridge. Because of all the changes i did change the pots to 500k. I also added an Orange tear drop capacitor.

I had the pickups installed before I changed the pots. What I noticed when I did change the pots was that is opened up both of the humbuckers to a wider range and gave a renewed clarity to the tone. It sounded a bit muddy with the 250k pots. I also put a coil tap on the bridge pup.

The SM-1 will work well without changing the pots. It should still have a good, clear tone.

Your pot change was from 250k to 500k?

And, why do you believe Fender would ship "mushy muddy blured immeshed"
sounding guitars, when a simple pot change does the job :?: :?: :?:
