Been lurking here for a few months while I decided what kind of new guitar to buy. I must admit I like Strats and my dream guitar is a '62 Strat but I played an American Special Tele at a guitar store a few months back and it just stuck with me. I couldn't shake the feel of it, I think people call that 'mojo.' So now I own a Tele with a maple fret board no less, that's also a first for me, and I'm smiling big.

I have a question though. The guitar sounds wonderful and tunes up OK but for some reason when I hit an open E or A chord there seems to be a bum note in there. Maybe it's an intonation issue? I also feel I might be physically pulling the guitar slightly out of tune on the JUMBO frets! Also new territory for me. Anyway, fancy pic follows...

Love it, love it so much I have one of my very own.

It seriously is a kick arse tele. Ya dont usually hear the bung note on the E or A chords, usually the D chord rings out due to intonation issues. You're dealing with the brass pole pieces here so intonation aint gonna be 100% on song, but you can get it 99.9% of the way, take it to a good tech to get it setup properly and you'll be right as rain.

i recently had an issue with a bum note, and it turned a string was slipping on the post. i wanted to re-string it anyway with bigger strings, so i done that and it solved my dodgy note problem, stays in tune now. the guitar also had big frets, and with the .9s that fender fits to its guitars my heavy touch kept fretting the notes out of tune. problem solved with bigger strings, i use .11s.

Congrats! That tele is a beaut!

Can I ask what type of cables you are using to connect your pedals? Looks solid indeed

Thanks, those cables are just the cheap ones available at the Guitar Center counter. I just bought some stuff for a practice setup on the road as I'm on an extended business trip.

Got the new Tele back from a fresh setup by Bryant at Charley's Guitar Shop in Dallas. It worked wonders, it sounds fantastic now. Here is another pic with the bedroom rig.

Well a little update after a month or so with this guitar. It's a real love & hate relationship so far. I think it's mostly the Jumbo frets that are causing the hate. No matter how I play the guitar I just cannot play a chord that isn't followed by a bunch of buzzing when letting it go. Even playing whisper light... Buzz, BUzz, BUZZ!!! It's not fret buzz from up the board it's coming from the played fret. Am I crazy here? Oddly enough other days this doesn't bother me. Maybe it's just a twang thang and I'm not used to Teles?

I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best guitar player so maybe I'm crazy and just think this thing sounds worse than it does. Today is a hate it day if you couldn't guess. Seems like an unplayable guitar at times.

Well I've been playing it for the past few hours and I love it again. 8) A little roll back on the tone knob and some slap back echo really makes it all better...almost.

Hmm, I'd maybe take it in for a set up before you drive yourself nuts!

He just got it back from a setup :)

New strings will always sound a bit more janglely, I find the string tension on the american special, when setup with the proper relief is generally lower than you standard strat or tele. This looseness, combined with the jumbo frets could contribute to that buzzing you're experiencing.

Give it time mate, you'll come to understand the guitar and how it reacts. Soon it will become second nature. This is the reason guitar players generally have more than one guitar.

Through the vox it'd sound killer, but whats your main rig rig?

I think the setup is right other than the action may be slightly low. I might move up to 10's or 11's which might help a little. Not used to 9's anyway.

Most recently for electric I was playing a DOT through a Valve Jr and a Blackstar. Right now I have only the AC4TVH and cab. Thinking about getting an AC-15 or a Super Sonic 22. Maybe a Boogie Mk III.
