I have been trying to learn guitar for just over a year and I recently purchased a set neck spalted maple tele. Yesterday I took my second guitar lesson from a phenominal guitarist who lives 85 miles from me. I brought along my new tele and blackstar 40 for him to review since he is a Fender guy.
He blew my mind with the things he can do with a guitar. He really dug the set neck tele and could not put it down. He liked the blackstar amp too. really nice, tight cleans and rich, saturated distortion. The tele in coil split mode definitely had nice twang and cut through but to me held just a bit more meat to the tone than his vintage fender pups on a strat he had. I was really impressed with my fender and my teacher who plays practically flawless in several genres.
Somehow my simple power chord runs just seem hollow after seeing such a display of ability.

When I'm around someone who really knows how to play, I sort of become more of a guitar owner than a guitar player. I know where I stand in the grand scheme of things!

great to hear that I am not alone. I have to do what my uncle tells me(another phenominal guitarist) he says quit trying to play catchup and just enjoy the ride. Good advice actually and I do enjoy the small victories, learning a new riff or getting a kind of fast paced chord progression right.

Hey Radarlover, welcome to the forum. That spalted maple Tele is awesome. It's Fender's answer to a Les Paul, very underrated IMHO. My local dealer had one and I was very impressed with quality and sound.

Thanks so much for the kind words! When I get around to telling my wife I bought another guitar I will have to post a picture. I like it better than my Gibson Les Paul. I just do not feel comfortable playing such an expensive guitar yet. I am loving the Fender and am seriously thinking of trading in my heavy $@! Les Paul for a really nice Taylor or Alvarez Yairi acoustic. The Fender gives me everything that the Traditional Pro does and I think I like the tone better. The LP is an awesome axe and I do not want to belittle it at all. I got the Traditional Pro because I wanted a solid body and man its a heavy beast. Now that I am getting marginally better I think I prefer a lighter, more agile guitar. I agree, the build quality on the Korean/Indonesian set neck Fenders are sick.
