I have the opportunity to buy a Fender Telecaster Select (with gold hardware).
But I noticed the serial starts with US11...., so it would be produced in 2011, but I thought the production of these Telecasters started in 2012 (I never came across this model with a serial US11...).

So is it possible the Telecaster Select was already produced in 2011 (and would be one of the first in the line) or could it be a fake (although everything else on the pictures look wright).
Anybody else with a telecaster select from 2011?

Please post the photos.

Are you buying it new or used?

Who/where are you buying it from?

The guitar is from from a guy (I don't personnaly know him) who bought the Select more than a month ago but at the end came to the conclusion it wasn't the right guitar for him. So he is selling it on a second hand marketplace on the internet for 1.500-1.600 euro (he paid 1.950 euro in the shop). It al looks OK to me, only the production date in 2011 seemed a bit odd (but I could be wrong). He has an invoice. But in these days you never know (I've encountered some scams before)

Bhoda - I replied to your post on the Fender Select thread but I'm reposting it here:

Fender probably started the first runs of these at the end of 2011 so they would be available for sale in January 2012. They do this all the time - the first American Specials had "Z9" (2009) numbers even though they weren't introduced until 2010; the revised American Deluxes also came out in early 2010 and the first ones had 2009 serial numbers. I've owned a 2004 American Deluxe Strat V-neck model with a 2003 serial number - again a guitar that wasn't introduced until 2004 but was made so they could ship out in January.

I have seen a few online with "US11" numbers - particularly ones from first run of 100 of each model that were also hand numbered (i.e. they had something like "25/100" written in ink on the back of the headstock). I would still consider them to be a 2012 model since they weren't publically available until January.

I haven't checked with Fender to see when my Select Tele shipped out, but the dealer had only had it in stock for a couple of weeks when I got it last month; it has a "US12" serial number. I should also note that the case for mine does not have the "Fender Select" medallion on the accessory compartment lid like the earlier ones had. It is identical to the ones with the medallion (tweed, dark brown ends, and red poodle plush lining) but no medallion. I have seen other ones that have arrived at dealers over the last two months shown with cases without the medallion.

Hi John, thanx for the response. I assumed they started the production in 2011. I'm getting the guitar next saturday (the seller agreed on the price of 1.460 euro), can't wait!

Good deal; I hope you enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying mine. Its the first guitar I've had in the past 2 years that's kept my Collings 290 in its case (actually after I got the Collings 2 years ago I wound up selling off most of my other guitars, and any other guitar I've demoed/purchased since I got the Collings wound up being returned - that's how much I bonded with that Collings).

I would also assume that the first production runs would have been in say November/December 2011. I didn't mention this in my other posts (both here and in the Fender Select Tele thread) that it could also be Fender using up the last of their "US11" serial number decals on guitars built in January 2012 - they don't change over the decals on January 1 (or whatever the first business day after New Year's Day may be); they will come close to using them up.

Also because of Fender changing around the serial number system in 2010 a couple of times the actual transition point could be a bit later in the year. For 2010 Fender decided to drop their old "letter + first digit" prefix system; the first serial numbers they used in 2010 had just a "10" as the prefix - so the number read "10xxxxxx". The font of the "10" was almost exactly the same as the font of the other 6 digits. That only lasted until about March/April when they switched to the "US10" prefix and they made that "US10" bolder and a different font from the other 6 digits. I think they've been a month or two "behind" since then, but they are getting closer to changing again near the first of the year.
